Witmer, Wilkinson help softball split at Muhlenberg

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Kaitlyn Witmer was one of three players with an RBI for the Elizabethtown College softball team in game two against Muhlenberg on Monday. Witmer put the game out of reach in the seventh and Alyssa Wilkinson pitched her fifth shutout of the season to help E-town split with the Mules.

Elizabethtown (16-12) ran into some trouble in the second inning of game one. Muhlenberg (12-20) put up six runs to get out to a fast 6-0 lead. E-town responded the next half inning.

The rally started with Kirstin Blass' eighth double of the season. Her shot to right field allowed Jess Kutteroff to score to put a run on the board for the Blue Jays. Emma Varrato kept it going with an RBI single to left field. Alertly, Varrato advanced to second on the throw and with Wendy Header at third and Kaitlyn Witmer at the plate, the freshman first base knocked a two-RBI base hit up the middle to make it 6-4.

The Mules added a run in the sixth and E-town was unable to get any closer.

Wilkinson was about to her early season form in game two. She pitched all seven innings for her ninth complete game of the season and eighth win of the year. She struck out four and allowed just five hits with no walks. Varrato knocked in her second RBI of the afternoon with a single through the left side to score Blass. Sarah Personette hit her third home run of the season later in the inning and Elizabethtown was off to a 3-0 start in game two.

It's all the run support Wilkinson would need. Witmer added her second two-RBI hit of the day in the seventh with a double to left. She had a team-high four RBIs in the two-game set. Blass was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game two and was 5-for-7 on the day.

Elizabethtown will host Albright on Thursday, April 26, for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
