Blue Jays run to 12-11 win over Franklin & Marshall

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Elizabethtown raced out to an early six-run lead and stole a season-high eight bases before holding off host Franklin & Marshall for a 12-11 non-conference win Monday afternoon.

Both teams emptied their dugouts with important conference games on the horizon, but in the opening innings it was a regular doing damage for the Blue and Gray.

Derek Manning scored Anthony Knight and Colby Smith with a single up the middle in the top of the first to give E-town (12-15) and immediate lead.

The Blue Jays added to their lead in the fourth on a Doug Hook RBI fielder's choice, and tacked on three more runs in the fifth courtesy of a wild pitch, Arley Shepherd RBI single and Andrew Fisher RBI groundout  for a 7-1 advantage.

Franklin & Marshall (15-14-2) came all the way back to tie it with six runs in the fifth, but Elizabethtown quickly regained an edge in the sixth.

Michael Rajnik drew a walk with the bases full to put the Jays back in front, 8-7. JT Thompson came up with an RBI and Fisher delivered the finishing blow with a two-run double to left for a 12-7 lead.

The Diplomats climbed back within a run in the seventh, but Nate Baxter and Ben Thorpe promptly shut the door with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Baxter struck out two while recording four outs and Thorpe worked around a hit and a walk with two strikeouts to record his first career save.

Justin Cherry started for E-town and sat the Dips down in order in each of the first two innings. In fact, Cherry cruised through the first four innings with only one run allowed.

Things started to unravel in the fifth, however, as F&M produced six runs on six hits and Cherry left with the game tied and two down. Freshman Reece Jones came on in relief, and Knight threw out Lincoln Pantell trying to steal second to end the inning.

Jones recorded his first career win, though he ended up being tagged with four earned runs after two inherited runners scored for the Diplomats in the bottom of the seventh.

Manning was a perfect 3-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Knight reached base safely for the 19th game in a row with a pair of walks. The Lancaster native also stole two bags.

First-year head coach Adam Sheibley worked 22 players into Monday's game ahead of tomorrow's Landmark doubleheader against Scranton.

Twelve different players accounted for Elizabethtown's 12 runs in the game. Fisher had a career-high three RBIs.

Jimmy Whalen had a game-high four RBIs and went 3-for-5 out of the lead-off spot for F&M. Pantell drove in three for the hosts.

Elizabethtown and Scranton conclude their Landmark series --postponed from April 2-- at Boyd Stadium on Tuesday beginning at 12:30 p.m.
