Story Links

TOWSON, Md. -- Elizabethtown took advantage of a doubles sweep to quickly put away its Landmark Conference match at Goucher on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays maintained their second-place standing with a 7-2 victory over the Gophers ahead of a showdown with Catholic on Sunday in D.C.

Sarah Donner and Kaitlyn O'Connor secured E-town's (7-4, 4-1 Landmark) first point of the day with an 8-6 decision at third doubles. Lenea Riehl and Meghan Chemidlin followed with an 8-4 win at first doubles and the Blue Jays made it 3-0 when Amber Burd and Laura Gribble fought off Goucher's Mackenzie Donohue and Kyoko Konoshita in a tiebreaker at second doubles 8-7 (2).

While the Gophers (7-10, 1-5) did manage a pair of wins in singles, it wasn't until the waning moments of the match when the outcome had long been decided.

Riehl was first off the court for the Jays in singles, putting the guests within a point of victory after handling Ali Gorson-Morrow 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 for her eighth win of the season. Riehl is 5-1 in her last six singles matches dating back to March 17.

Elizabethtown locked up the win with Donner's 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Morgan Hartman at No. 4. Burd posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over Donohue at No. 3 and Chemidlin topped Miranda Egan-Brooks 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2, as the Blue and Gray built a 5-0 lead.

Katie Mazerka and Konoshita were straight set winners for Goucher at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

Elizabethtown will have a chance to push Catholic out of the race for a home postseason match with a victory over the Cardinals on Sunday. The start time for Sunday's match has been moved up an hour to noon.
