Lippy goes distance for Blue Jays in split with Susquehanna

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa . -- Anthony Lippy limited Susquehanna to a single run over seven innings for the Elizabethtown College baseball team in a series-opening win on Saturday at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. The River Hawks came back in game two to steal a split with the Blue Jays after a 12-9 win to cap off the day.

Brennan Snyder provided a spark early for the Elizabethtown (10-15, 4-5 Landmark) offense, launching a three-run shot to left field to bring home Anthony Knight and Colby Smith. Knight had extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single through the left side to lead off the inning. Smith hit a single to third to put two men on for Snyder.

Lippy ran into some trouble in the opening inning. Susquehanna (12-17, 6-5 Landmark) had two runners in scoring position with one out in the first. Lippy induced a grounder to Smith at third base and covered first as a grounder came to Snyder off the bag. He flipped to Lippy, who tapped the bag for the third out to hold the River Hawks without a run.

Snyder singled to right field in the second inning and recorded his fourth RBI in just two at-bats. Riley McGinley scored on the play and E-town was ahead 4-0. A batter later, with the bases loaded, Derek Manning was hit by a pitch. Taggart Hess trotted home to make it 5-0.

Susquehanna put one run on the board in the third on Tom Giaimo's RBI single, but it was the only run Lippy would surrender in his seven innings of work. Mike Christy tacked on a solo jack in the fifth.

Lippy's final line read 7IP, 5H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 5K. He improved to 4-4 on the season. Smith, Snyder, and Hess each had two hits apiece for the Jays in game one.

Game two provided plenty more scoring from both sides. Hess and Smith (2) had RBI hits in the bottom of the second as E-town gave Braden Stinar a 3-0 lead. Christy and Hess drove in a run each in the third and the Jays were ahead 5-1 after three complete.

The River Hawks scored four in the fourth to tie the game at 5-5. Cole Luzins, Susquehanna's top hitter, doubled in his fourth run of the game in the sixth. Luzins had hit a three-run home run in the fourth to tie the game. His RBI double put SU up 6-5.

Nick Bein, a defensive substitution at first base, drew things level in the sixth with an RBI single through the right side that eluded a pair of diving defenders. Manning then brought home Knight and Bein to send Elizabethtown back into the lead, 8-6, in the sixth inning.

Another four-run inning saw the River Hawks jump back in front, 10-8, in the seventh. Susquehanna tacked on two more runs and led 12-8 going into the bottom of the ninth.

Nick Lorenz knocked an RBI single to left field and E-town cut the deficit to 12-9, but Brendan Damiano closed out the game and the visitors hung on for the split on the opening day of the three-game series. Knight's 13-game hit streak came to an end in game two, but he still managed to extend his on-base streak to 17 games.

Hess led the Jays in game two with a 4-for-5 effort. Manning produced three hits for E-town, and Smith and James Kantner each recorded two hits.

Elizabethtown will celebrate Senior Day tomorrow, Sunday, April 22, before the series finale begins at 12 p.m.
