Mahoney, defense stellar in overtime setback to Colorado College

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- NCAA tournament hopeful Colorado College erased Elizabethtown's three-goal fourth-quarter lead and sullied the Blue Jays' regular season home finale at Wolf Field on Friday afternoon, claiming a 7-6 victory on Aaron Maslow's goal with 57 seconds left in overtime.

Maslow scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals for the Tigers, who extended their winning streak to 10 games and strengthened an already impressive case for a Pool B berth into the national tournament.

Elizabethtown (7-8) goalie Tom Mahoney made 20 saves, the second time he's stopped 20 shots or more in a game this season, and had the Blue Jays in position to win late in the fourth.

The hosts led 6-3 with under 11 minutes to play and still maintained a two-goal edge with less than four to go.

Colorado College found a way to muster goals from Daniel Lunghamer and Maslow in the final minutes, however, to send the game to overtime tied at six.

Though the Tigers (11-1) won the face-off to start OT, junior defenseman Jeremy Klipple quickly caused a turnover that was scooped up by Michael Hofstedt. Hofstedt sprinted towards the CC goal, but his bid to win the game for the Blue and Gray was stopped by goalie Andrew Harwood, who was fantastic in his own right with 15 saves on the day.

Mahoney countered with a save on a Boe Gold shot at the other end, but E-town would turn the ball over with the shot clock ticking down on its next possession.

Colorado College re-established itself in the attack zone and called timeout with 1:09 left in the extra session. It proved to be the right call. Just out of the timeout, Maslow used a pick to free himself from a defender and beat Mahoney with a shot from the right wing to win it.

Mahoney and the Blue Jay defense put forth a heroic effort on Friday, holding the nation's sixth-leading scoring offense to its lowest goal total this season and more than nine goals below its season average (16.45). Six different E-town players recorded a caused turnover and the Jays held Colorado College to just 26 shots through three quarters, before the Tigers went on a 16-3 tear in the fourth.

Mike Scrafano registered a pair of goals, including his 30th of the season, and led E-town with three points. Mike DiGenova had a goal and an assist, while Austin Dews, Cameron Goodling and Christian Neelon also scored for the Jays.

CC's John Sutro and the E-town's Goodling traded first-quarter markers, but the second was all Blue Jays, as they outscored the Tigers 3-1 to take a 4-2 lead at the half.

Tigers' leading-scorer Robbie Stern was bottled up by the Jays' defense for most of the afternoon. Stern scored twice, reaching the 40-goal mark in the process, but needed a game-high 16 shots to do it.

Elizabethtown, which has already clinched a Landmark Conference tournament spot, will finish the regular season at Catholic on Saturday, April 28.
