Men's lacrosse ends regular season with one-goal loss at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Elizabethtown entered Saturday's regular season finale at Catholic assured a postseason home game.

The Blue Jays bolted to a 10-4 halftime lead before resting many of its starters in the second half. Catholic took advantage, scoring eight of the last 10 goals to squeak out a 14-13 victory.

Four goals from Mike Scrafano and an Alex Filbert hat trick paced the Blue Jays offensively, while faceoff specialist Kyle Pienik won 16-of-25.

Elizabethtown (7-9, 4-2 Landmark) jumped out to a 4-2 lead after a quarter. Four different players scored the goals, as Brandon Sankey, Ben Hiltebeitel, Filbert and Mike DiGenova all found the back of the net.

Filbert had a pair of second-quarter goals and Michael Hofstedt also scored before Scrafano's natural hat trick (three consecutive goals uninterrupted) sent the Jays to the half up six.

Head coach Chris Perzinski made the decision to rest many of his starters from the early stages of the third quarter on in advance of Wednesday's home semifinal game against third-seeded Goucher at 4 p.m.

It was not only a way to try and mitigate the risk of injury, but give E-town's reserves a chance to go against Catholic's top players. The Cardinals (8-8, 2-4), already eliminated from playoff contention, were playing their final game of the season and it was Senior Day in D.C.

Cards senior attackman Bennett Bradley almost single-handedly carried his team to victory. Bradley scored seven of his game-high and Catholic single-game record eight goals in the second half, including four in the fourth quarter.

Bradley's goal with 2:36 remaining broke a 13-all tie and stood up as the game-winner.

Freshmen Cameron Goodling and Cody Richter each had a goal for Elizabethtown. Junior defenseman Jeremy Klipple finished with team-highs of three caused turnovers and three ground balls.

All four goalies on the roster saw action, too. Tom Mahoney started and made four saves in the first half. Brandon Calle played the third, stopping five Catholic scoring bids. Jack Myers (four saves) and Christopher Tongel split the fourth.

Jack Schmidt (six saves) and Alex Mulyk (seven) split duties at the other end for CUA. The hosts also got two goals from Liam Clancy along with a goal and two helpers from Samuel Montgomery and Patrick Silverman.
