Record-setting week lands Mahoney Landmark Defensive AOTW award

TOWSON, Md. -- Elizabethtown College sophomore Tom Mahoney was voted Landmark Conference Men's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week Monday, following a week in which he set the program's single-game saves record.

Mahoney, from Hillsborough, New Jersey, stopped 27 shots in last Wednesday's loss to second-ranked York (Pa.), before making 10 saves in a 9-8 overtime victory over Goucher on Saturday.

Mahoney was credited with six or more saves in every quarter against a potent York attack, surpassing Davis Miracle's former record of 23 saves set back in 2016, ironically at York. Despite allowing 13 goals in the loss to a potential national championship contender, Mahoney had a .675 save percentage.

The Blue Jays backstop was on his game again Saturday, sniffing out numerous high quality scoring chances from Goucher early. He posted 10 saves, a .556 save percentage and five ground balls.

Mahoney has started the last three games for Elizabethtown, making 50 of his 51 saves this season during that stretch. He currently leads the Landmark Conference with a .614 save percentage and is sixth in the conference in saves.

Monday's award marked the third of Mahoney's career. He received recognition twice in 2017 as a freshman (April 17 and May 1) in leading the Blue Jays to their first Landmark title.
