Men's lacrosse scratches out win over Moravian to secure Landmark tourney berth

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown didn't have its best stuff on Wednesday, but it had enough to power past Moravian, 9-5, at Wolf Field and clinch a Landmark Conference tournament berth for the fourth straight season.

Pesky defense and four man-up goals allowed the upset-minded Greyhounds to hang around deep into the fourth quarter, but E-town buckled down and scored three goals in the final 4:27 to relieve some pressure.

Alex Filbert and Scott Nizolak collected goals in the last 3:07 of a relatively uneventful first quarter to give the Blue Jays (7-7, 4-1 Landmark) a 2-0 lead.

With Kyle Pienik again a force at the face-off dot and the Elizabethtown defense standing tall, the hosts opened a four-goal advantage by the midway point of the second. Andrew Watts connected for his eighth goal of the spring at 10:28 and Nizolak deposited his second of the day past Moravian goalie Kurt Dick with 7:36 left in the first half.

The Greyhounds (5-6, 1-3) took advantage of two man-up opportunities late in the quarter, however. James Carroll and Austin Adams would score --the latter coming with just 18 seconds remaining-- to close the gap to 4-2 at the break.

Moravian made it a one-goal game when Hayden DuPont intercepted a pass in the midfield and found Mark Laratta for a goal less than two and a half minutes into the third.

A pair of quick strikes late in the third put E-town back up by three late in the third. Mike DiGenova found Watts down low for the junior's second goal of the game and 14 seconds later senior long-stick midfielder Michael Hofstedt took advantage of an unsuspecting Hounds' defense to score his first career goal from the left wing.

Moravian made the Blue Jays pay for their penalties twice more, as Alec Oriolo scored a man-up goal with 15 seconds left in the third and Austin Adams got his second just under five minutes into the fourth to close within 6-5.

The Blue Jays would hold on, though, pulling away at the end when Ben Hiltebeitel sandwiched a pair of goals around one from Filbert in the last 4:27.

Watts took a game-high seven shots, while DiGenova, Filbert and Hiltebeitel all had five as the Jays racked up 35 on the afternoon.

Elizabethtown doubled up Moravian at the face-off dot with Pienik winning 12-of-18. The sophomore from Hackettstown, New Jersey also led the way with six ground balls as the Blue Jays held a 29-21 advantage in that category.

Kurt Dick made a number of big stops to keep the Hounds in the game and registered 12 overall. Tom Mahoney had seven stops for the Blue and Gray.

E-town got two caused turnovers apiece from DiGenova, Jeff Bloom and Alec Leslie. Leslie's twin brother, Tanner, finished with one caused turnover for Moravian.

The Blue Jays wrap up their regular season home schedule with a non-conference game against Colorado College on Friday at 4 p.m.
