Scranton surpasses Blue Jays

YORK, Pa. -- Scranton and Elizabethtown have squared off in a handful of close matches over the last few years, including two of the last three Landmark championships, but on Sunday the Royals experience and depth paid off.

Scranton took control of the race for the Landmark's No. 1 seed with a convincing 8-1 win over the Blue Jays indoors at Wisehaven Tennis Center.

It was Elizabethtown's first loss in conference play after a 3-0 start and snapped a four-match winning streak overall.

Kaitlyn O'Connor secured the Jays' only point of the afternoon, taking an early lead before bouncing back from a second set loss to prevail in a 10-point tiebreaker 6-3, 6-7 (5), 10-3.

The Royals (13-3, 4-0) swept second and third doubles without much issue, though E-town's (6-4, 3-1) top team of Lenea Riehl and Meghan Chemidlin came up just short against Scranton's Julia Frattaroli and Nastashia DeNunzio, 8-6.

Scranton went on to win four of the six singles matches in straight sets, and captured five of six available points in all. Chemidlin won the opening set over DeNunzio and went to a tiebreaker in the second, but DeNunzio took it and later secured the point in a super tiebreaker 3-6, 7-6 (8), 10-8.

Elizabethtown dropped into a second-place tie in the conference standings with Catholic at 3-1. Fourth-place Moravian is lurking at 2-1 and the Blue Jays will head to Bethlehem on Tuesday to face the Greyhounds at 4 p.m.
