Hess, Smith homer in 11-6 win at Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Taggart Hess connected for his first career home run and Colby Smith also went deep in Elizabethtown's 11-6 victory at Lancaster Bible Thursday afternoon.

Smith's two-run jack, his third of the season, opened the scoring in the top of the third. Mike Christy added an RBI single later in the inning and the Blue Jays were on their way.

Lancaster Bible (10-9) scored twice in the bottom of the third, but Elizabethtown came right back to post a five-spot in the fourth and took a 10-2 lead in the fifth on Hess's two-run home run.

Eleven runs and 16 hits were more than enough support for starting pitcher Anthony Lippy. The senior tied a career-high with eight strikeouts and limited the Chargers to two earned runs (four total) on seven hits over seven frames.

Six Blue Jay (8-13) batters finished with multiple hits, led by Christy's three. Christy also drove in three along with Smith.

Anthony Knight, Derek Manning, Riley McGinley, Hess and Smith had two hits apiece.

Knight extended his hitting streak to 10 games, scored three times and raised his team-best batting average to .444 (24-for-54). Manning had his third straight multi-hit performance.

Braden Elliott and Beau Heagy led the hosts with two hits and Josh Mayer knocked in two.

LBC starting pitcher Zack Leonard took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) in three innings. The Chargers' bullpen then coughed up eight runs over the next 3.2 innings.

Elizabethtown will get three days of rest with its Landmark Conference bye weekend before returning to action on Monday at Albright.

The Jays were to take on Arcadia this coming Sunday at home, but the Knights must instead make up a conference game against Messiah.
