Game Recap: Softball |

Softball wins one close, wins one big for third sweep in Florida

MINNEOLA, Fla. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team won both its games on Friday in Florida, but those wins came in totally different ways. E-town squeaked out a 5-4 win in extra innings against Roger Williams before dominating Morrisville State 15-0 and ending the game in five innings. The Blue Jays moved to 7-1 on the season with the pair of wins and won both games for the third time on the trip in four tries.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 5, Roger Williams 4 (Final/8 innings)
Kaitlyn Witmer's 10th hit of the season gave Elizabethtown (7-1) an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single to center. Wendy Header was one second when Witmer delivered her base hit to bring in her fifth run of the year.

Brinley Schmidt drove in her first of three runs in the game in the top of the second to double E-town's lead to 2-0. Christina Dark had led off the inning with a double down the right field line and, with two outs, Schmidt singled her home.

Alyssa Wilkinson went for her fourth consecutive win to start the season and shut out Roger Williams (0-1) through the first four innings while maintaining the 2-0 lead. She allowed one hit in each of the first three innings, but did not allow a run. She retired the side in order in the fourth.

The Hawks managed to tie up the game at 2-2 in the fifth. A two-out double by Amanda Boulter scored Bella Malvinni from first. Haley Ledbetter then knocked in a run with an RBI single up the middle that tied the game. Wilkinson got Taylor Chatowsky out swinging to end the inning.

Alexa Califano was at third for RWU in the bottom of the seventh, 60 feet from home as the game-winning run. Ledbetter was at the plate with the chance to give the Hawks the win, but on a 1-0 count, she popped a fly ball into short left center. Header charged from her center field spot and made a diving play on the ball, catching it in her glove for the final out of the inning to force extras.

The Blue Jays struck in the top half of the eighth. With Witmer at third base, Dark flied out to deep center, allowing the base runner to score and give Elizabethtown the late-inning lead. Schmidt delivered what turned out to be a very important two-run single with a bloop shot over the second baseman's head and into right field. Wilkinson and Jess Kutteroff both scored on the play and the Jays led 5-2 needing just three outs to win it.

Roger Williams made a comeback attempt with an RBI sac fly and an RBI triple to cut the Blue Jays' lead down to just 5-4 with a runner at third. Wilkinson got Alyssa Murray to pop up to second base and end the threat and the game.

Emma Varrato, Kutteroff, and Schmidt each had two hits apiece to lead Elizabethtown. Wilkinson moved to 4-0 with her fourth complete game and a career-high six strikeouts. Boulter went 3-for-3 in the game and four different players for the Hawks had RBIs.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 15, Morrisville State (Final/5 innings)
Elizabethtown once again struck in the first inning. Emma Varrato doubled in Wendy Header, who had singled to third a batter prior. Kaitlyn Witmer added an RBI single through the right side to score Varrato from second as three straight hits produced two runs for E-town.

Five of the first six defensive outs for Amber Sergas were strikeouts, four swinging and one looking. Sergas ended up with eight in the game to tie for her second-highest K output of her career. She only surrendered two hits in five innings of work.

Kirstin Blass hit a two-out double to the left field fencing to make it 3-0 Blue Jays. Blass and Header also crossed the plate in the inning, unearned. Elizabethtown was up 5-0 after two innings played.

Morrisville State (1-4) had a runner in scoring position in the third inning after Amanda Labe singled up the middle then stole second. She was at third after a defensive error with two outs. Emily Vesely hit a soft liner up the middle that looked bound for the grass in center field, but Blass alertly moved to her left and in the hole behind second, made a diving snow cone catch to prevent the run from scoring and end the top half of the third inning.

The bottom of the third is where Elizabethtown did the majority of its damage, with nine runs in the inning on eight hits. The Blue Jays were able to bat around as Madeline Hamilton (pinch hit), Jess Kutteroff, Brinley Schmidt, Emma Varrato, Kaitlyn Witmer, Lindsey Fasolo (pinch hit), and Christina Dark picked up RBIs to move E-town ahead 14-0.

After another run in the fourth inning, Sergas retired the side in order to end the game after five innings. She moved to 2-1 on the season as Elizabethtown scored 15 runs for the first time since putting up 17 in the second half of doubleheader at DeSales on March 30, 2016.

Header and Witmer both tied for a team-high with three hits each as five players had multi-hit efforts for E-town.

The softball team will play its final two games in Florida on Saturday, March 10. Their first game of the day is against UMass Boston at 9 a.m.
