Softball finishes spring break trip with a Saturday split

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team finished its spring break trip with a split on Saturday, earning a 3-0 shutout victory over UMass Boston before dropping a 3-1 decision to Northwestern (Minn.). The Blue Jays will return to Pennsylvania with an 8-2 record and a whole lot of confidence heading into the remainder of the schedule.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 3, UMass Boston 0
Alyssa Wilkinson was once again on her game for Elizabethtown (8-2). The sophomore threw her third complete game of the season and second shutout in five starts as well as her second one-hitter. She also struck out a career-high nine batters in the game. UMass Boston (0-1) wasn't able to put a runner on base until the fourth inning after Wilkinson retired the side in order each of the first three innings.

The Blue Jays had eight hits in the game, but only one was the true difference in the game. Kirstin Blass took the first pitch she saw in the bottom of the third and sent a single up the middle to put a runner on with one out in a 0-0 game. Wendy Header stepped into the box and put a 3-1 pitch through the left side. A throwing error on the play at second allow Blass to move up to third after the grad student took a look and saw she had the time to get to third safely. Header moved up to second with a stolen base, but it did not matter as she and Blass would score easily after Varrato sent a towering blast over the left field fencing for her fourth homer of the season, a new career-high.

The three-run shot was all Wilkinson needed to earn her fifth win of the season. Even though the Beacons had runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth innings, Wilkinson never allowed a runner to reach third base. She put down the side in order in the sixth and did not allow a runner on first to score in the seventh as she closed it out to give E-town its eighth win in nine games.

Game 2: Northwestern (Minn.) 3, Elizabethtown 1
Kirstin Blass singled to lead off the second and final game of the day and trip for the Jays. Blass drilled a 2-2 pitch to center field to get on base. Wendy Header and Emma Varrato also singled to make it three straight to start the game against Northwestern (Minn.) (4-4).

Blass, at third, was able to score the game's first run on a passed ball. Each runner moved up a base as Elizabethtown had two in scoring position. Eagles' starting pitcher Abbie Nelson was able to get out of the jam only down 1-0 going into the home half of the first.

Though E-town finished the game with more hits than UNW, it was the Eagles that put more runs across the plate.

Kayla Madison singled in a run in the third to tie the score at 1-1. After Madison's RBI hit went to left field, Ellie Ronning sent an RBI hit to the opposite field to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

The Blue Jays couldn't bring home a runner on third in the fourth inning, which was the game-tying run at the time. Northwestern (Minn.) added another run in the fifth to make it 3-1.

Brinley Schmidt got on with a one-out single in the seventh, but E-town wouldn't get a runner in scoring position as Nelson finished off the Jays. Emma Varrato and Schmidt each had two hits for EC in the loss.

The softball team returns to action on Wednesday, March 14, with a home doubleheader at The Nest against Lebanon Valley. Game times are 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
