Wilkinson pitches perfect game, softball sweeps Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Alyssa Wilkinson's sizzling start to the season continued on Sunday in the Elizabethtown College softball team's Landmark Conference sweep of visiting Drew. The reigning Pitcher of the Week threw a perfect game for the Blue Jays through five innings and Sarah Personette's homer ended game one in five innings. E-town also won game two in five innings.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 8, Drew 0 (F/5)
Wilkinson only needed 50 pitches to remain unbeaten at 6-0 on the season. She fanned three, did not walk a batter, and did not allow a hit in her five innings of work. Elizabethtown (10-2, 2-0 Landmark) made sure five innings would be all the lefty would have to throw.

Kirstin Blass, who went 2-for-3 in game one, doubled to left center in the bottom of the third of a scoreless game. A two-out passed ball allowed the shortstop to advance a base and she would score on Wendy Header's soft liner into center field to put E-town up 1-0.

Brinley Schmidt tacked on an RBI single in the fourth to score Kaitlyn Witmer, who led off the inning with a base hit to right center. Wilkinson helped her own cause, following Schmidt with a double to center field that was mere inches from being a home run instead of two bases. She scored Schmidt from second after the freshman had advanced on an error on the previous play. The Jays led 3-0 after four.

Blass doubled to start the bottom half of the fifth inning to get things cooking for Elizabethtown. Emma Varrato singled her home and, with a heads up play, wound up on third after making it to second on the throw and to third on an error. Witmer brought her in with a single to left. Christina Dark doubled to right center to put two in scoring position as the Jays threatened to end game one early. Sarah Personette did just that, launching a towering three-run shot to left center that reached the pathway beyond the outfield fencing to cut game short with an 8-0 final.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 9, Drew 1 (F/5)
Amber Sergas put Drew (7-5, 0-2 Landmark) down in order to start the second game with a pair of ground outs and a swinging strike out sandwiched between.

Blass took a 3-1 pitch to deep left field for her second home run of the year, which ties her single-season career-best from 2016. The Blue Jays led 1-0 after the first frame.

The Rangers came right back to tie things up at 1-1 in the next half inning. Michelle Nestor singled up the middle to score Meghan Beyer from third. Drew had the bases loaded, but Heather Ronchi lined up to Varrato at second base to end the jam for the junior pitcher. It was the only run she'd surrender in the game.

E-town put up five runs on six hits in the third to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Jess Kutteroff scored on a fielding error in the infield. Dark singled up the middle to score a pair of runs. Personette and Schmidt both added back-to-back RBI hits as the Jays chased Cara O'Leary from the game.

Personette and Schmidt had base knocks to start the bottom of the fifth. Kutteroff singled to right center to drive in a run. Blass added an RBI ground out to score Courtney Fitzsimons. Wendy Header dropped in a base hit to left field with Kutteroff on second. The speedy left fielder raced around third as coach waved her home and the sophomore scored easily to end game two at 9-1.

Blass had a game-high three RBIs for the Blue Jays, while Dark added two. Sergas allowed just three hits and one unearned run while striking out one to move to 3-2.

Elizabethtown will host Dickinson tomorrow, March 19, for a non-conference doubleheader at The Nest beginning at 3 p.m.
