Baseball splits twinbill with Monmouth (Ill.)

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Jared Witner and Justin Cherry did not allow an unearned run Thursday morning as Elizabethtown defeated Monmouth (Ill.), 7-3, in game one of a doubleheader at the Lawnwood Complex. The Blue Jays couldn't quite make it all the way back from a 3-0 deficit in the afternoon game, losing 3-2.

GAME 1
Elizabethtown 7, Monmouth (Ill.) 3

The Blue Jays shattered a goose egg in the runs column, scoring seven unanswered runs between the fourth and fifth innings to take control of game one.

Monmouth nearly made it out of the fourth with its 1-0 lead intact, but an error on a ball hit by Mike Christy to first base extended the inning and Elizabethtown made the Scots pay.

Colby Smith and James Kantner hit back-to-back RBI singles to put the Jays in front. Smith later scored on a passed ball for a 3-1 advantage.

Jared Witner and Justin Cherry retired the Scots in order in the bottom of the fourth, before E-town's offense went back to work.

Riley McGinley led off the fifth with a single, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. After McGinley scored on an error, Derek Manning knocked in his fifth run of the Florida trip to make it 5-1. Christy capped the inning with a two-run double to the gap in left.

Neither team had a ton of success with the bats in the opener, as both finished with five hits. Witner threw the first 3.1 innings for E-town and struck out one while allowing three hits. Cherry notched his first career win with 3.2 innings of two-hit relief and whiffed three. The Jays' hurlers did not give up an earned run between them.

Scots' pitcher Tyler McDonald struck out six without a walk in a complete game performance, but took the loss with seven runs allowed (three earned) on five hits.

McGinley, Manning, Christy, Smith and Kantner each had a hit for the Blue and Gray. Jake Starkey went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI for Monmouth.

GAME 2
Monmouth 3, Elizabethtown 2

Consecutive RBI triples from Anthony Knight and Michael Rajnik in the bottom of the fifth inning accounted for all of Elizabethtown's offense in a one-run game two loss.

The Blue Jays (3-4) fell behind 3-0 on a run in the first and two in the third.

Derek Manning doubled with one out in the sixth and moved to third on Mike Christy's fly out, but the Jays could not come up with the equalizer.

Connor Sharp gave the Monmouth bullpen another game of rest by going all the way, throwing a five-hitter and striking out four.

Colby Smith went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base for the Blue and Gray, as three of the team's five hits went for extra bases.

Freshman Colin McTaggart made his first career start and struck out three in four innings. Only one of the three runs charged to McTaggart was earned. Fellow rookie Kelly Holdren finished up with three innings of scoreless relief and three strikeouts.

Monmouth's Matt Temaner had two hits. Bryson Sheppard, Grant Myers, Max Gare and Christian Lett produced RBIs for the Scots.
