Softball splits with Carthage, Concordia Chicago

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team extended its win streak to five with an 8-1 win over Carthage in the first game of the day to match the best start in program history since 2002 at 5-0, but had the streak snapped at five and fell in the second game, 8-3, to Concordia Chicago.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 8, Carthage 1
Elizabethtown (5-1) got on top early against the Lady Reds when Emma Varrato sent her second home run of the season over the fencing on a 1-0 pitch. Kaitlyn Witmer drew a walk to put a runner on for Sarah Personette, who belted her first collegiate homer to left field, a two-run shot, and E-town led 3-0 after the first inning.

Personette added her third RBI of the game in the third inning to score Varrato, who had walked and stole second. She moved up to third on a fielder's choice a batter later before scoring on the freshman's bunt.

Alyssa Wilkinson continued her scoreless innings streak well into the game. Carthage (2-5) didn't have a runner past second base until the sixth inning. Veronica Pieters singled up the middle and scored Danielle Koziczkowski from second to end the lefty's 19-and-one-third inning scoreless streak. It was the only run the Lady Reds could get off the southpaw, who retired the side in order in three of the seven innings.

Though Carthage made it 4-1 in the top half of the sixth, E-town doubled the lead the next half inning. Jess Kutteroff singled up the middle to drive in Wilkinson. Lindsey Fasolo, who followed Wilkinson with a single to left, also scored on the play as an error in the outfield allowed her to round the bases and score safely.

Brinley Schmidt knocked in Kutteroff, who had gotten to second on the error in the play prior, with an RBI single to make it 7-1. Varrato singled in her second run of the game with a base hit to left center that allowed Kirstin Blass to score.

The Lady Reds had a runner in scoring position, but Wilkinson got a swinging strikeout and fielder's choice to end the game and keep the Blue Jays unbeaten at 5-0, matching the best start since 2002.

Varrato had two hits and two RBIs while Personette led the Jays with a game-high three RBIs. Wilkinson improved to 3-0 with her third consecutive complete game to start the season.

Game 2: Concordia Chicago 8, Elizabethtown 3
Concordia Chicago (4-2) put up two runs in the top of the first inning of E-town's second game, the first time the Blue Jays had trailed all season. The deficit didn't last long, though.

Elizabethtown responded in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of runs to it at 2-2. Kirstin Blass took a 3-1 pitch high in the zone over the fence in center field for her first homer of the season and fourth of her career. Two batters later, Varrato did the same with a long ball to circle the bases, a solo shot, for her second home run of the day and third of the season. Her three home runs through six games already matches her career high.

Cougars' pitcher Julianne Nation settled into the game and held the Blue Jays in check after the first inning. CUC took the lead back in the top of the second with an RBI single by Sydney Sterrett.

It was a 3-2 game into the fifth when Concordia Chicago added two more runs to the total with some aggressive base running. Stefanie D'Anna stole second and third in the inning, with two outs, and was singled home by Melissa Balkema. Balkema then stole second herself and came home on an RBI double by Allison Kruk to make it 5-2.

Elizabethtown got a run back in the sixth off the bat of Kaitlyn Witmer. Blass walked to start the inning. Wendy Header laid down the sac bunt to move her up to second. With one out, Witmer singled up the middle, enough for Blass to score from second and cut the Cougars' lead to 5-3.

CUC came right back with a three-run seventh to open up the game and put the pressure on the Blue Jays' bats. Nation retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win for Concordia Chicago and snap Elizabethtown's five-game win streak.

The Blue Jays have Thursday off before another set of games on Friday, March 9. Play begins with a 9 a.m. start against Roger Williams.
