Game Recap: Softball |

Wilkinson throws complete game one-hitter and softball wins two more

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Elizabethtown College softball program is off to its best start since 2002 after winning twice for a second consecutive day at The Spring Games in Florida and moving to 4-0 on the season. Alyssa Wilkinson threw another complete game shutout in game two after E-town held on for a close win in the team's first game of the day.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 10, Nebraska Wesleyan 8
Elizabethtown (4-0) wasted no time in getting on the board against Nebraska Wesleyan (4-5). Emma Varrato hit a two-out double in the top of the first inning to put herself in scoring position. A passed ball moved her up to third and Kaitlyn Witmer brought her home with an RBI single to make it 1-0.

Christina Dark started against the Prairie Wolves and held them in check. She got a ground ball double play to end the first as Kirstin Blass threw to Varrato at second base for the force out and Varrato tossed over to Witmer to complete the DP and end the inning.

The Blue Jays' bats were alive and well in the second inning with three runs on four hits. Sarah Personette double to lead off the top of the second frame. Dark singled up the middle to move the freshman over to third. Brinley Schmidt brought her home with an RBI single. A fielder's choice RBI for Wendy Header make it 3-0 and one batter later, Varrato tacked on an RBI single through the right side that pushed the lead to 4-0.

Destiny Indra scored on an error for NWU in the bottom of the second, but that's all the Prairie Wolves would get in the inning. They did cut the deficit in half on Jordan Ardnt's RBI single in the third.

Varrato doubled in a run in the fourth and Blass scored on a throwing error to put two more on the board for E-town. Dark drew a bases loaded walk later in the fourth inning to make it 7-2 and give herself ample room going into the latter half of the game.

The offense continued to provide for the junior left hander as Blass and Witmer both hit RBI singles in the fifth. Dark took a 9-2 lead into the bottom half of the fifth.

Nebraska Wesleyan got some momentum going in the sixth with a five-spot after already scoring a run in the previous inning and that quickly, a seven-run lead for the Blue Jays turned into just a one-run game by the seventh.

Unfazed by the big spot in the game, E-town came to the plate and delivered an insurance run. Schmidt led off the seventh with a base hit to right. Blass sacrificed to move her up to second. After the second out was recorded, who else but Varrato to come through for the team with a single to left, deep enough to allow Schmidt to freely cross the plate and provide a bit of breathing room for EC.

Amber Sergas retired the side in order in the seventh after coming on in the sixth in relief to get Elizabethtown the win.

Varrato batted 4-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Witmer had three hits and Blass and Personette both had two apiece. Dark pitched five innings and struck out two to get the win, her first of the year.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 6, Penn State Behrend 0
Kirstin Blass and Christina Dark provided all the offense Elizabethtown would need in the second game of the day as Alyssa Wilkinson went to work against Penn State Behrend (3-1). The Lions had scored in all three prior contests, but Wilkinson did not yield a single run in seven innings and allowed only one hit in the game.

E-town scored twice in the second inning on one play with two outs. Wilkinson drew a two-out walk, Jess Kutteroff hit a bunt single, and Brinley Schmidt walked to load the bases for Blass. The shortstop took the first pitch for a ball and on the second, ripped a single through the right side scoring two and giving the Jays the 2-0 lead.

Behrend sac bunted the leadoff runner to third, but with two outs, Wilkinson got the batter to line out to Blass at short to end the threat.

Though two runs in the second was enough, the Blue Jays decided to double that run production in the third with a four-spot. Varrato led off the inning with a double and Witmer singled to put two runners in scoring position. After Personette walked to load the bases, Dark singled home Varrato and Witmer to double the lead from 2-0 to 4-0 on one hit. Four batters later, with two outs in the inning, Blass delivered her second two-run hit of the game with a double to left field. Dark and Personette scored on Blass' two-bagger.

Wilkinson cruised through six hitless innings until Lauren Olevnik broke up the no-hitter in the seventh with a base hit to right field. E-town got a fielder's choice to end the game as Courtney Fitzsimons went to second to get the lead runner out and end the game, a 6-0 shutout win for the Blue Jays.

The 4-0 start is the best since the 2002 team began the season 5-0. Blass, Varrato, and Witmer each had two hits to lead Elizabethtown. Blass had a team-high four RBIs. Six different Blue Jays scored runs in the game. Wilkinson threw her second consecutive complete game for her second win in as many days. She struck out one and walked one in the game and allowed just the one hit.

Elizabethtown will have Tuesday off before returning for two more games on Wednesday, March 7. E-town starts off Wednesday against Carthage at 9 a.m.
