Baseball scores 20 in win over Muskingum, falls to Dominican

FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- Nick Lorenz had four hits and Derek Manning homered twice and drove in four runs as Elizabethtown produced its first 20-run game since 2015 in a 20-11 victory over Muskingum, Monday. The Blue Jays dropped their afternoon matchup against Dominican (Ill.) 6-1.

ELIZABETHTOWN 20, MUSKINGUM 11

Monday morning's tilt with Muskingum was a complete 180-degree flip from Sunday's contest against Penn State Behrend, in which E-town and the Lions combined for just 13 hits between them.

The Blue Jays racked up 18 hits alone and used a seven-run third, five-run fifth and four-run seventh to put on its best offensive display since a 20-5 win at Merchant Marine on April 12, 2015.

Elizabethtown put the Muskies (1-2) in a deep hole early, batting around and scoring seven times on seven hits in the third. Derek Manning hit a 2-run double and Colby Smith smacked a run-scoring double to left center as the Jays (2-1) chased Muskingum starter Ryan Hernandez before the inning was over.

Muskingum crawled back into the game with five runs over the fourth and fifth innings, cutting the Blue Jays' lead to 9-7. But back-to-back homers from Mike Christy (2-run) and Manning spawned a five-run bottom of the fifth for E-town, which pushed its lead back to seven.

Freshman Michael Rajnik plated Brennan Snyder and James Kantner with a pinch-hit 2-run single for his first career hit and RBIs to make it 16-7 Jays in the seventh, and Lorenz added even further cushion to the lead with a 2-run double --his third double of the game.

Manning greeted new Muskingum pitcher Mark Rest with his second blast of the day to lead off the eighth and Riley McGinley was hit by a pitch to bring in Elizabethtown's 20th run.

The Blue Jays tortured Muskie pitching throughout. Lorenz was 4-for-7 with a pair of runs scored and three RBIs. Manning totaled four RBIs and three runs scored while going 3-for-5. Kantner and Snyder scored three times apiece and Smith knocked in three.

Rookie Tyler Dunbar made his first career start on the bump for the Jays and allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits over 3.1 innings. Classmate Kelly Holdren struck out three in 2.2 to earn the win in his collegiate debut, and sophomore Ben Thorpe worked the final three innings.

Right fielder Matt Stewart led the Muskingum offense with a 5-for-5 showing. Stewart tripled, drove in two and scored twice. Eddie Harper hit safely three times and had three RBIs.

DOMINICAN (ILL.) 6, ELIZABETHTOWN 1

Brennan Snyder's RBI single back through the box opened the scoring in the top of the second, but the Blue and Gray could give starting pitcher Mike Garvey no further help.

Garvey kept the Stars in check until the sixth when they scored three times on the strength of two hits and a 2-out error to take a 4-1 lead.

Despite six hits over the first six innings, the Jays (2-2) were held off the scoreboard in all but the second inning.

Dominican scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh and a Colin Janison RBI double in the bottom of the eighth to provide the final margin of victory.

Garvey equaled his career-high with seven strikeouts while scattering seven hits and four runs (two earned) over six innings for a quality start.

George Sherman went the distance for the Stars (3-3), giving up the one run on nine hits and striking out two for a complete game win. Leadoff hitter Joe Kukla registered three hits in five at-bats and third baseman Nathaniel Natividad went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs to guide Dominican's offense.
