Varrato collects 100th hit, Blass nears cycle for Blue Jays

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Emma Varrato collected her 100th career hit in the first game Sunday for the Elizabethtown College softball team, who are spending spring break in Florida for The Spring Games. Kirstin Blass was a home run shy of the cycle in the second game as E-town started off 2018 2-0 with a pair of wins to start the season. The Jays beat Finlandia, 3-1, before shutting out Bridgewater State, 8-0.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 3, Finlandia 1
It was a pitcher's duel in the season opener for Elizabethtown (2-0), as Amber Sergas and Kassandra Avila gave up zero runs through three innings.

Brinley Schmidt was in scoring position in the third with two outs on the board, but E-town couldn't manufacture the run as the game went 0-0 to the top of the fourth. Sergas gave up a two-out single, but no harm came from the base knock as Varrato was to lead off the fourth searching for her first hit of the game and 100th of her career.

Varrato battled with Avila, fouling off the first two pitches. The third pitch of the at-bat was a ball, and the fourth was out of the park. Varrato smacked a line drive solo home run to center field, the fifth of her career, for her 100th hit, in style.

The Blue Jays held the lead into the sixth, but Finlandia (5-2) produced the game-tying run on an RBI single up the middle from Makenna Gorham. Gorham then put herself in scoring position with a stolen base, but Sergas got her pitching counterpart to strike out looking to end the threat.

E-town came right back in its half of the sixth with a pair of runs. Sarah Personette led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on Lindsey Fasolo's sac bunt. Sergas brought Personette home with an RBI double to center and advanced to third on the throw. It was a heads up play by Sergas, who would score when Courtney Fitzsimons flrew out to center, deep enough for the sac fly. Sergas tagged from third and scored to make it 3-1.

Sergas closed out the game in the seventh without allowing a hit and striking out one. The junior struck out four batters in the game and gave up just one run over seven innings for the complete game win.

Varrato, Sergas, and Kaitlyn Witmer each had hits for the Blue Jays.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 8, Bridgewater State 0
The offense was clicking in the second game, rolling off 18 hits, the most for the program since the team went for 20 at Lycoming on April 17, 2010. Seven of the nine batters had at least two hits and combined for 15 of the 18 in the game, led by three hits each from Kirstin Blass and Sarah Personette.

Brinley Schmidt led off the third inning of a scoreless game with a single and moved up to second on Blass' sac bunt. Wendy Header singled to advance Schmidt to third and put two on for the Jays with one out. Header stole second to put a pair in scoring position for Varrato. The junior cashed in with an RBI single through the left side to score Schmidt from third and give E-town a 1-0 lead. Kaitlyn Witmer made it back-to-back RBI singles as Header scored on the base hit.

One run was all the Jays would need, but the offense kept producing for game two starting pitcher Alyssa Wilkinson. Blass brought home her first RBI of the year with a single to center in the fourth to plate Jess Kutteroff.

Elizabethtown tacked on an additional two runs in the fifth that made it 5-0 by the end of the frame. Varrato and Personette each singled in runs in the sixth to blow open the game.

Blass, already with a single and a double, hit a triple to right field. She rounded third and was on her way to the plate, but got caught in a run down. Blass was able to avoid an out, which would have ended the inning, and scored on the play to make it 8-0.

Wilkinson made it consecutive complete games for E-town and held on to the shut out, the first of her career. She spread out seven hits over seven innings and struck out four batters. Blass and Personette both hit 3-for-4 in the game with an RBI each. Varrato had a team-high two RBIs to go along with a pair of hits. Blass also stole a base, which moved her into sole possession of eighth all-time in stolen bases (18).

Elizabethtown continues play tomorrow with a 9 a.m. start against Nebraska Wesleyan.
