ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown picked the perfect time to break through with its first win of the spring.

The Blue Jays prevailed in their Landmark Conference opener against Moravian on Saturday afternoon, a match much closer than the 7-2 final score indicates.

Ryan Caris and Tyler Spinello set the tone for the day with an 8-0 sweep at first doubles against the Greyhounds' Chris Csencsits and Isaac Schefer. Elizabethtown (2-5, 1-0 Landmark) also pulled out an 8-6 win at third doubles behind Julian LeMaire and Michael Ryzuk to lead 2-1 going into singles.

Peter Demyan pulled Moravian (3-3, 0-1) even for the second time with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Caris at No. 1, but the remaining five matches went to the Blue Jays --albeit not without drama.

Sophomore Tyler Spinello outlasted Schefer in a back-and-forth battle at No. 2. Spinello claimed the first set 6-3, but Schefer responded in the second, winning 7-5 to extend the match. Simply playing a third set wasn't enough. The two competitors went to a tiebreaker in the decisive set, where Spinello locked up a huge point for the Jays 7-6 (5).

There was no such suspense in the third and fourth flight matches, where E-town won in straight sets. Tristan Boheim defeated Austin Grace 6-4, 6-2, and Nick Strobel escaped a tight first set to hold off Mike Palmeri 7-5, 6-1.

LeMaire and Alec Schneider each collected wins in a super tiebreaker to give the Blue Jays five of a possible six points in singles play. LeMaire downed Mason Hudnall 7-5, 1-6, 10-8, while Schneider rallied from a set down to beat Sean Kearns 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.

Saturday's match was moved indoors to Winning Touch Tennis in Allentown after a midweek snowstorm left Moravian's on-campus Hoffman Courts unplayable. It was also the first league match for both teams. E-town was picked fifth in the Landmark Preseason Poll and the Greyhounds were tied for seventh.

Elizabethtown returns to action on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 in a non-conference match at Lebanon Valley.
