Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Marymount (Va.) gets away from women's lacrosse in second half

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Tied 11-11 after Kate Ziegler's second straight goal for the Elizabethtown College women's lacrosse team, Marymount (Va.) scored the next six goals and E-town couldn't make up the deficit in time as the Saints held off the Blue Jays for an 18-13 non-conference win at Wolf Field on Wednesday. Ziegler scored the first four goals of her career in the loss, while Carly Thompson recorded the 100th goal of her career in the defeat.

Abby Wescott scored 1:43 into the game to get Marymount (Va.) (3-0) out to a 1-0 lead, but Carly Thompson took the next draw control and wound up scoring the game-tying goal 13 seconds later. Wescott assisted on Jessica Crews' goal to return the lead back to the Saints, who added two more to go up 4-1 with 22:03 left in the first half.

After Wescott's second of the game that gave MU the three-goal lead, Elizabethtown (1-2) held the Saints scoreless for nearly 15 minutes. In that time, E-town picked away at Marymount's lead and eventually went in front on Madelyn Baker's free position goal.

Emily Garvin took a pass from Katie Thompson, who was stationed behind the Marymount goal, and scored her second of the season to make it 4-2. Half a minute later, Carly Thompson dished the ball off to a cutting Ziegler, who registered her first career goal that made it a 4-3 game. 55 seconds after Ziegler's first, Carly Thompson received a pass from Baker and deposited it into the twine, her second of the game and 100th of her career, to tie it at 4-4.

The 5-0 run by the Blue Jays continued as Baker put EC in front for the first time in the game with her free position goal, beating Holly Reik. Baker scored on a second free position three and half minutes later that put Elizabethtown ahead by two, 6-4, with 10:08 to go in the half.

Liah Agouras broke the Saints' scoreless drought with her first of the season and Crew knotted things up at 6-6 less than a minute after Agouras' goal.

Katie Thompson returned E-town in front with an unassisted tally, her fourth of the season, with 3:42 left before the break. Eliana Cassel and Crew posted two goals for Marymount in the last minute of the half to give the visitors an 8-7 lead at halftime.

It was a 3-1 run to start the second half for Marymount. Wescott, the program's leader in points, scored her ninth of the year that put the Saints ahead 11-8 with 21:44 to play.

Kate Thompson scored another unassisted goal to bring the Jays within two, and then Ziegler added two consecutive goals for E-town, one from Carly Thompson and one on her own that tied the game back up and forced Marymount to call a timeout.

The timeout seemed to get the Saints back in gear as they rolled off six straight goals to take a 17-11 lead into the last eight minutes of the game. Carly Thompson notched her hat trick with a free position goal scored a player down with 6:35 to go. Bridgette Stacom answered right back for Marymount to maintain the six-goal lead.

Ziegler also scored a player down for the Jays on another Carly Thompson assist, but it would be the final goal for Elizabethtown.

Reik was a huge difference maker in the game for Marymount. The goalie made 14 saves, including 10 in the second half as E-town outshot Marymount 36-22. Abby Kopytko had three for EC.

Ziegler led the Jays in scoring with four goals. Carly Thompson had a team-high six points (3g, 3a). Baker also had a hat trick for Elizabethtown.

The women's lacrosse team will host Penn State Abington on Saturday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at Wolf Field.
