Men's basketball drops Landmark opener, 88-72, at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Elizabethtown only trailed defending Landmark Conference champion Moravian by a bucket at the half, but the Greyhounds opened up a double-digit lead less than five minutes into the second and went on to defeat the Jays 88-72 on Saturday.

Senior guard Brandon Berry led the visitors with 19 points --setting a career-high for the third time this season. Ethan DuBois supplied 15 and Michael Pastore 14.

The Blue Jays (3-3, 0-1 Landmark) fell into an early 10-2 hole, before rallying with 10 unanswered to take a 12-10 lead on a Pastore three with 12:39 left in the first.

The teams would swap the lead seven more times before the half was through. Five straight points from Pastore and a Josh Christ trey gave E-town its largest lead of the day, 24-17, with 4:04 remaining.

Six different players would score for Moravian as it closed out the half on a 13-4 run to lead 30-28.

Keith Otto and Jimmy Murray combined for the Hounds' (4-2, 1-0) first nine points out of the locker room as their lead increased to 39-32.

Steve Breeman's 3-pointer with 16:35 to go gave the hosts their first double-digit lead, but Berry responded in short order with a triple of his own. Breeman connected again on Moravian's next possession to make it 45-35 and his teammates would maintain a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

Elizabethtown shot 41.9% (26-of-62) for the game, nearly matching Moravian's 29-of-66 (43.9%), but the Jays made just 12-of-22 free throws.

Oneil Holder led Moravian with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Holder had his way offensively, missing only once on 12 shots. Will Brazukas finished with 16 points and seven assists, while Breeman (14) and Nicholas Casazza (10) combined for 24 points off the bench.

Berry came on strong in the second half with 15 of his 19 points. The Lorton, Virginia native was 5-of-7 from the floor, 3-of-4 from 3-point range and 2-of-2 at the charity stripe over the final 20 minutes. He previously set career-high scoring totals against Penn State Berks (17) and Lebanon Valley (18) this season.

Connor Moffatt had nine points and nine boards, and Bryce Greene nine and eight for the Jays.

Moravian's victory was its eighth straight over the Blue Jays going back to the 2014-15 season.

Elizabethtown has five games remaining in 2018, four of which are on the road. The Jays play the first of those this coming Wednesday at Penn State Harrisburg. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
