COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- Junior
Colton Rex took third at 141 pounds and senior
Cole Cameron made it back to the consolation final at 149 as Elizabethtown competed in Ursinus Fall Brawl on Saturday.
Rex built early momentum with a 16-1 tech fall in his opening match against Penn State Mont Alto's Bryce Palamar. He notched a 4-3 decision over The College of New Jersey's Anthony Rua in the quarterfinals before dropping his semifinal bout againt Worcester Polytechnic Institute's Wayne Nolette.
The Slatington native came back with an 11-8 decision against Anthony Foggia of Camden County College in the consolation semifinals and defeated Rua for a second time, 9-6, to claim third.
Cameron collected a pair of pins and avenged a loss to defending national runner-up Greg Warner of York in a 5-1 day that saw him finish in a tie for third due to reaching the NCAA-instituted six-match limit. The senior transfer pinned Johns Hopkins' Yosef Ellis-Rech in just 32 seconds to start the day and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 9-1 major decision over Apprentice's Tyler Johnson in round two.
A 3-0 setback to TCNJ's Eric Friedman in the quarters wouldn't deflate Cameron's day. He came right back to pin Charles Hudson (Liberty) right before the buzzer in a fourth-round consolation match. That set up a rematch with Warner, ranked second in both the NWCA and d3wrestle.com polls. Saturday's outcome was much different than Wednesday's 16-0 tech fall by Warner in the opening period. This time, Cameron prevailed, 14-11, to eliminate Warner from the tournament.
Cameron pushed through to the consolation final with a 14-12 decision over WPI's Peter Nash, but the match could not be contested due to Cameron and Navy Prep's River Curtis having both reached their maximum bout limits.
Sophomore
Tyler Mentzer advanced to the semifinals at 174 on the strength of wins over York's Jordan Sciamanna (11-10) and WPI's Tyler Wilson (5-1). He would fall to WPI's Brendan Marion in the semis and came up a match short of placing in the top four with a consolation semifinal loss.
At 165, freshman
Hunter Beaudet went 3-2 with a 17-1 tech fall over Penn State Mont Alto's Joe Mays and a pin of Liberty's Carter Ellis. Classmate
Colton Shriner also won by tech fall over Mays, 16-0, and flipped last Wednesday's loss to York's Jesse Rocco into a 6:57 pin.
Heavyweight
Max Rhoden made the quarterfinal round in his bracket, and 184-pound entry
Dayne Ross registered a 4:47 pin of WPI's George Horta in a third-round consolation match for his lone win on the day.
Elizabethtown will defend its title at the U.S. Marine Corps Star City Open next Sunday in Salem, Virginia.
