TOWSON, Md. -- Senior goalkeeper
Brian Gately and freshman forward
Garrett Winchilla were selected as Landmark Conference Athletes of the Week, Monday.
The awards come on the heels of the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team knocking off defending Landmark champion Drew, 1-0, last Saturday at Ira R. Herr Field.
Gately received Defensive Athlete of the Week honors after making four saves for his fourth shutout of the season in the victory over the Rangers. The Lancaster native and Hempfield grad stopped two shots in each half and the Blue Jays put forth an excellent defensive effort as a team. They held Drew to seven shots --its lowest total of the season-- and just four on goal. Gately hasn't allowed a goal in more than 324 minutes (324:42) dating back to the Alvernia game on Sept. 19, a streak that spans parts of four games. He's 3-0-2 with one goal allowed and three shutouts in five games since Sept. 15 after E-town started 0-4-1.
The weekly award is the second of Gately's career. He was also named Defensive AOTW on Sept. 18, 2017.
Winchilla provided the game-winning goal against Drew in the 82nd minute to earn his first career Offensive Athlete of the Week accolade. The rookie from Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania picked a great time to net his third goal of the season --and first career game-winner-- taking a thru ball from
Gilbert Waso and striking it off the left glove of Ranger goalkeeper Jason Adamo and into the right side of the net. Winchilla is E-town's leading goal scorer on the season and also paces the team in shots (36) and shots on goal (17).
Monday's awards were the first weekly men's soccer awards won by Elizabethtown student-athletes this season.
