Blue Jays blank Mules, extend unbeaten streak to 10 games

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Jorge Sanchiz provided the only offense necessary and the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team earned its seventh clean sheet of the season, 1-0, at Muhlenberg Tuesday evening.

The victory pushed Elizabethtown's season-long winning streak to seven games and its unbeaten streak to 10 (8-0-2) since Sept. 15.

In a tight defensive game that featured just four corners per side and seven shots on frame, the Blue Jays' finally found a way to break through with their talented freshman Sanchiz leading the way in the 58th minute.

Eli Perry's throw from the right sideline found its way across the 6-yard box where Sanchiz's first shot attempt was blocked in front by a Muhlenberg (6-7-2) defender. The Barcelona, Spain native collected his own rebound near the left post and slid it in for a 1-0 Blue Jay lead.

Elizabethtown keeper Brian Gately and his defense did an outstanding job holding firm after the goal.

The Mules only got three shots off in the final 32 minutes. Gately stopped Shaun Bartholomew's shot in the 67th minute and made both of his saves in the second half for his sixth shutout of the year.

During their current unbeaten streak, the Jays have yet to allow more than one goal in a game.

Sanchiz was credited with a game-high three shots, matching Muhlenberg's Kiefer Cundy. JD Haaf had two for E-town, but the Mules held a 12-10 edge overall.

Muhlenberg keeper Raymond Leto made four saves in a losing effort.

Elizabethtown, which has already clinched a home Landmark semifinal game, can secure the conference's No. 1 seed with a win or draw at Catholic on Saturday in its regular season finale.
