Blue Jays secure Landmark's top seed with draw at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Though Saturday's regular season finale between Elizabethtown and Catholic produced no goals on the field, the Blue Jays were still able to check off one of theirs off of it.

A scoreless draw in the nation's capital locked up the No. 1 seed and home field advantage for Elizabethtown in next week's Landmark Conference Championship tournament.

The Blue Jays needed a win or tie to fend off the Cardinals (10-5-1, 5-1-1 Landmark), but showed little desire to walk away with a tie after a 13-shot first half.

Catholic actually came up with the first dangerous opportunity in the 12th minute when a Tyler Martin corner was headed by Mason Reinhart towards the left post. Teammate Brian Galfond got to it first and flicked a shot up over E-town keeper Brian Gately, but senior defender Danny Sullivan was there to clear it off the line.

Only three of the Jays shots found their way on goal in the opening 45 minutes. Catholic keeper Jack Long stopped Gilbert Waso in the 18th minute, Tyler Colasanto in the 32nd and JD Haaf 54 seconds short of halftime.

Gately made three of his five saves in the second half and the Blue Jays (8-4-4, 5-0-2) went into overtime for the fifth time this season.

The extra 20 minutes wouldn't determine a winner. Catholic outshot E-town 2-1 in both overtime periods. The Cardinals' Jake Nabbie hit the crossbar from about 20 yards out in the 103rd minute, while Elizabethtown's Garrett Winchilla had a shot stopped by Long in the 109th.

The Blue Jays, who extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games (8-0-3) since Sept. 15, finished atop the Landmark table with 17 points. They'll host fourth-seeded Moravian in a semifinal game on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Catholic, the No. 2 seed (16 pts.) will also host a semifinal, facing No. 3 seed Drew.

Elizabethtown claimed an 18-14 edge in shots, though the Cardinals put six on goal to the Jays' five. Haaf had a game-high shots for the Blue and Gray, while Ben Alexander came off the bench to take four for the hosts. Corners favored E-town, 8-5.

Gately, who leads the Landmark with a 0.94 goals against average, registered his seven shutout of the season, which was also the team's eighth clean sheet.
