Blue Jays bombard Goucher on Homecoming

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Gilbert Waso and Garrett Winchilla had four points each and Elizabethtown clinched a home Landmark Conference semifinal game with a 5-1 runaway victory over Goucher on Saturday at Ira R. Herr Field.

The Blue Jays won their sixth straight game and improved to 7-0-2 in their last nine.

Goucher looked to crash Elizabethtown's Homecoming party, scoring the game's first goal at 11:27. Zachary LaFaver's cross into the 6-yard box found Jack Tchantchuing-Ngoko, who headed it off the crossbar before heading the rebound into an open net.

Elizabethtown (7-4-3, 5-0-1 Landmark) responded the way a conference-leading team should. Precise passing from Will Connolly and Clark Williamson set up Waso for his sixth goal of the season --and fifth in the last six games-- less than two minutes later.

Waso's goal was the first of three in a span of 7:18 for the Blue and Gray. In the 20th minute, Winchilla ran onto a Waso thru ball and one-touched it into the right side of the net for a 2-1 E-town lead.

Just 53 seconds later it was Winchilla striking again with his fifth of the season to extend the Jays' lead to 3-1. The goal came off a Danny Sullivan corner that was headed back across the box by Tyler Colasanto to an unmarked Winchilla.

The Blue Jays took advantage of a stiff wind out of the west, putting 12 shots towards the Goucher goal in the first half. E-town outshot the Gophers 18-8 for the game.

Late in the second half, the hosts added to their lead with two more goals. Waso led JD Haaf into the 18-yard box in the 73rd minute. Haaf collected, cut left and beat Goucher (5-10-1, 2-4) keeper Daniel Hendry. Cameron Sheva capped the scoring in the 81st minute, following up his own header off the right post to slot home his third goal of the campaign on the rebound.

Hendry and Elizabethtown keeper Brian Gately both made four saves.

Elizabethtown remained atop the Landmark standings with the victory and can clinch home field throughout the Landmark Conference Championship tournament with a win or draw at Catholic next Saturday.

The Blue Jays are on the road at Muhlenberg for their final regular season non-conference game Tuesday evening at 7.
