Goucher hands field hockey first Landmark loss of the season in OT

TOWSON, Md. -- Conference games aren't a given no matter the record and the Elizabethtown College field hockey team were on the wrong side of that Saturday afternoon at Beldon Field. Goucher handed E-town its first Landmark loss of the season, 2-1, in overtime to snap the Blue Jays' ten game win streak.

Maya Belin, one of the Landmark Conference's leading scorers, was close to getting her 12th of the season 1:15 into Saturday's game, but Margo Donlin made her first of seven saves to deny the Goucher (7-7, 2-4 Landmark) forward her goal. Jesse Sartor made a defensive save in the 20th minute, also denying Belin.

The first half was evenly played, as the Gophers had a slight 6-5 edge in shots. Kayla York made a defensive save on the opposite end for Goucher to deny Cecilia Carter off one of Elizabethtown's (13-3, 5-1 Landmark) penalty corners.

Belin did manage to get her 12th goal of the season just before halftime. Belin scored with eight seconds to go to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead at the break.

The Blue Jay had back-to-back chances stopped in the 54th minute as goalie Devin Brashear did her best to keep the 1-0 lead for her team. Brashear was also the benefactor of a missed penalty stroke attempt in the 54th minute by E-town.

Madison Kubik breathed life back into the Jays, scoring with less than ten minutes to go, her second of the season. Brooke Zehr and Kubik were stopped in the 64th minute as Elizabethtown went for the go-ahead score. Goucher held off the Blue Jays and forced overtime.

Madison Resolme made an important defensive save 30 seconds into the first overtime session. Almost two minutes later after Elizabethtown was denied the game-winner, Goucher scored it. Belin's shot attempt was saved, but Jackie Juarez's follow up went in and gave the Gophers the 2-1 victory to halt E-town's win streak at ten and hand the Blue Jays their first loss in conference play this season.

Elizabethtown slips down into second place in the conference with next Saturday's matchup with Catholic looming. A win over the Cardinals would give the Blue Jays home field advantage. First, the Jays are on the road at Rowan on Wednesday, October 24, at 7 p.m.
