Men's soccer gets big road win at Moravian, clinches playoff berth

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Playing less than 30 minutes from home, junior JD Haaf scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute to send Elizabethtown past Moravian, 2-1, Wednesday evening at John Makuvek Field.

The Blue Jays became one of the first teams to clinch a spot in the Landmark Conference Championship tournament with the victory, their fifth in a row. E-town also extended its unbeaten streak to eight games (6-0-2).

Three minutes after Moravian tied the game on a header by Rocky Fatuova, Haaf, the Breinigsville native who grew up 25 minutes southwest of Moravian's campus, came through with his fourth goal of the season for the winner.

Elizabethtown dictated nearly every aspect of a chippy match between two of the Landmark's top teams. There were six bookings in all, including five in the second half. Moravian finished a man down after one of its players received a second yellow and soft red in the 81st minute.

The Blue Jays (6-4-3, 4-0-1 Landmark) had a whopping 23 shots to Moravian's nine (11-4 on goal). Haaf led all players with seven shots, while freshman Garrett Winchilla, who hails from 30 minutes north of Moravian in Pen Argyl, had six (two on goal) for the Blue and Gray.

It was a familiar face opening the scoring for the guests, as Gilbert Waso headed a pass from Alex Musgnug past Greyhounds (6-6-2, 3-2) keeper Michael Bone in the 32nd minute for his 40th career goal and a 1-0 E-town lead.

Waso is just the ninth player in team history to reach the 40-goal mark and continued a recent tear that's seen him collect 13 points (4 goals, 5 assists) during a five-game point-scoring streak. He moved ahead of Mark Pratzner (1986-89) for ninth on Elizabethtown's all-time scoring list with Wednesday's goal (105 pts.).

Goalkeeper Brian Gately made three second-half saves to pick up his fifth win of the season. Two of those came while trying to preserve a shutout streak approaching 500 minutes. Fatuova's goal for Moravian in the 69th minute was the first allowed by Gately in 508:51 across seven games going back to Sept. 19.

With two Landmark regular season games remaining, the Blue Jays stayed atop the conference standings with 13 points (4-0-1), one ahead of second-place Catholic (4-1). The Blue Jays and Cardinals both punched their postseason tickets with wins Wednesday.

Elizabethtown now sets its sights on a home playoff game, which it can secure with a victory over Goucher on Homecoming this Saturday. Game time is at 1 p.m.
