WASHINGTON, D.C. --
Sarah Schneider registered season-highs of 18 kills and 20 digs, but Catholic defeated Elizabethtown, 3-1, in a Landmark Conference match on Wednesday evening.
A slow start hampered the Blue Jays' ability to move above .500 in conference play. E-town (14-13, 1-2 Landmark) found itself in a 2-0 hole after losing the opening set 25-22 and the second 25-15.
Schneider stepped up with eight kills,
Elizabeth Zeiber added three of her career-high 10 and
Mackenzie Garner also had three as the Jays avoided the sweep with a 25-21 win in the third.
Though Elizabethtown's offense improved in the third and fourth sets, the guests could not counter Catholic's (16-10, 2-1) .375 hitting percentage in the deciding set. The Cardinals had 16 kills and only committed a single error to cruise, 25-13, in the fourth.
The Cardinals hit .234 for the match, including better than .350 in both the second and fourth sets. Patricia Martinez led the hosts with a match-high 20 kills and 13 digs. Mackenzie Collier had 13 kills and 20 digs and Isabelle Cooper provided 12 kills and 13 digs to give Catholic three double-doubles on the night.
The trio of Schneider, Garner and Zeiber combined for 38 of Elizabethtown's 46 kills in the match. The Blue Jays had three double-doubles of their own, as Zeiber totaled 16 digs and
Rileigh Hudock had 41 assists and 13 digs.
Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro finished with 14 digs.
Elizabethtown returns to Thompson Gymnasium on Saturday where they'll face McDaniel at 11 a.m. and Manhattanville at 3 p.m.
