Blue Jays remain unbeaten at home with statement win over #23 Juniata

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Thompson Gymnasium has been a sanctuary for the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team this season. 7-0 at home coming into Wednesday night's showdown with No. 23 Juniata, the Blue Jays extended their home win streak this season to eight games after a 79-55 statement win over the Eagles, who were atop the Landmark Conference standings at 5-1 coming into the night. Veronica Christ paced the Jays with her first career double-double and Abby Beyer led the team in scoring to help E-town to a fourth straight win overall.

Elizabethtown (11-6, 5-2 Landmark) was off to another flying start in the first quarter, where they've outscored teams by a plus-40 margin this season. Christ had her shot going through the first, going 3-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc for a team-high eight points in the opening ten minutes. As a team, E-town was 8-for-18 with six assists on those makes and a 22-13 lead after one. Lydia Lawson (4), Beyer (3), Emma Hoesman (3), Mikayla Ruth (2), and Ashley Reynolds (2) all contributed to the nine-point lead heading into the second.

Christ's third three of the game early in the second quarter lifted the Jays' lead into double digits for the first time and from there the lead grew as the hot shooting continued for the home squad. The trey sparked a 12-0 run for the Blue & Gray to push the lead to 20 before Lexey Shick dropped in a three to halt the run. EC led 34-17 with 4:21 left in the first half.

Juniata (16-2, 5-2 Landmark) on the other hand struggled from the field. E-town forced the Eagles into ten misses on 13 shot attempts in the second. Two of Juniata's three makes were treys from Shick and Rachael Anstine. Elizabethtown was effective from the free throw line as well, going 8-for-9 in the second. Beyer, Hoesman, Marissa Emlet, and Reynolds all contributed two foul shots apiece for the Blue Jays, who finished a season-best 93.3% from the line (14-for-15).

E-town scored the final six points of the quarter and outscored Juniata 22-9 in the second to double up the Eagles at the half, 44-22.

The Eagles' offense fared better in the second half, but the Jays kept pace with their first-half shooting numbers to match them. Dani Atkinson, who led the visitors with 19 points, and Morgan Instone combined for 12 third-quarter points as Juniata shot 6-for-13 from the floor. Though it was Elizabethtown's lowest scoring quarter of the game, they still outscored Juniata by a point, 17-16, in the third. Five different players for the Jays posted points in the third as the lead was 23 by the start of the fourth quarter.

Christ completed her first career double-double in the fourth, adding three rebounds to her total to give her a game-high 12 to go along with her 17 points. Reynolds, Ruth, and Lawson each had six rebounds and E-town won the battle on the boards 43 to 31, despite Juniata having a little more height.

Beyer came off the bench to pour in 19 on 7-for-8 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from deep. Hoesman had 12 points, her most since a season-high 16 at Cabrini on January 3. Lawson tied her career high with eight dimes on the night. She also had a game-high five steals.

It was Elizabethtown's first win this season over a ranked opponent. The Blue Jays will have an opportunity to make it two straight upsets when nationally-ranked Scranton visits Thompson Gymnasium on Saturday, January 27, for a 4 p.m. Landmark Conference battle between top teams in the league.
