Scranton sends women's soccer to first conference loss

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A two-goal difference in a span of less than three minutes was a deciding factor in the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team's 3-1 loss to Landmark Conference foe Scranton on Saturday at Ira R. Herr Field.

Elizabethtown (5-3-1, 1-1 Landmark) battled with Scranton (6-2-2, 2-0 Landmark) through nearly 70 minutes as neither team could find the back of the net.

Mazie Stiles changed that in the 69th minute with the first of her career off a feed in front from Royals' leading goal scorer Jamie Hreniuk. Stiles was able to beat a defender and the goalie to the ball and toe the ball into the goal to give Scranton the lead.

Teams are usually most vulnerable right after they score, and E-town proved that, going right down the field on the ensuing kickoff. Alli Lasky chipped in a ball toward Lydia Lawson, who was in the box looking for the delivery. Lawson jumped and flicked a header toward the goal. Royals' goalie Colleen Berry charged out to challenge Lawson, but was a step slow and the sophomore forward got her head on the ball and sent it goal-bound. In the air, the ball hit the arm of a Scranton defender, and the referee promptly awarded the Blue Jays the penalty kick and a golden opportunity to knot the game up at 1-1 just 26 seconds later.

A goalie can go one of three ways, and Berry guessed correctly, diving to her left to make the save on the PK and keep Scranton in front. Just over two minutes later, Erica Licari netted her third of the season that advanced the visitor's lead to 2-0 in a big swing of momentum.

Hreniuk added her seventh of the season in the 82nd minute.

Lawson got one back for Elizabethtown after Alex Jacobs slotted a through ball to the left side of the defense. The oncoming Lawson took a few touches to get by her defender and beat Berry to the lower right corner of goal with 16 seconds left to break up the shutout.

Hailey Parks made five saves in goal for the Blue Jays, while Berry had three for the Royals.

E-town heads on the road Monday, October 2 to face Penn State-Berks in non-conference action at 7 p.m.
