Scranton silences Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Two-time defending Landmark Conference champion Scranton got goals from Jon Roberts and Connor Casey to drop the Elizabethtown men's soccer team, 2-0, Saturday night at Ira R. Herr Field.

Roberts' header off a deflection in the box in the 20th minute found the back of the net and would prove to be all the Royals needed.

Scranton was 0-2-1 against the Jays (5-5, 0-2 Landmark) in the regular season since Elizabethtown joined the Landmark prior to the 2014 season, but gained the upper hand over the Blue Jays in each of the last two conference championship games.

A relatively even first half produced only the Roberts goal, as both teams attempted four shots. Brian Gately made all three of his saves on the night in the first 45 minutes for the Blue and Gray, and Elizabethtown held a 2-1 edge in corners.

The Royals (7-3, 1-1) stifled E-town's offense in the second half as well. Even though the Blue Jays recorded seven shots, only Clark Williamson's chance in the 69th minute made it on frame, and it was stopped by Scranton goalkeeper Balke Hammert.

Connor Casey guaranteed the Royals a vital three points with his insurance marker in the 87th minute. Casey blocked a clearing attempt by E-town, took the loose ball and beat Gately to the near post after a few touches.

Gilbert Waso took a game-high four shots for the Jays. Elizabethtown finished with 11 shots, two behind Scranton's 13.

The Blue Jays are the lone team in the league without a point in the conference standings after two games and face a near must-win against Moravian Wednesday evening at 7 on Herr Field.
