Jays score three unanswered, hold on for win at Alvernia

READING, Pa. -- Duncan George, JD Haaf and Gilbert Waso scored goals less than eight minutes apart Wednesday night and the Elizabethtown men's soccer team escaped Alvernia with a 3-2 road victory in the teams' annual Kicks for Cancer match.

It was Alvernia that drew first blood with Adam Orndorff's 11th goal of the season coming in the 13th minute on the Golden Wolves' first shot.

Orndorff's goal stood up for much of the first half and came on one of only two Alvernia shots in the opening 45 minutes.

With just over six minutes remaining before halftime, George tied it for the Blue and Gray (5-2), faking out a defender and blasting a shot off the crossbar and in.

Elizabethtown wasn't content, however, and took its first lead less than five minutes later. This time it was Haaf beating Golden Wolves' (4-4) keeper Zach Rider in the 44th minute for a 2-1 halftime advantage.

A mere 66 seconds into the second half, the Blue Jays were awarded a penalty kick and Waso converted it for a two-goal lead. Elizabethtown would have to stave off an own goal in the 61st minute, but did so effectively by allowing only one shot in the second half.

Elizabethtown had the better of the chances with 12 shots (seven on goal) to Alvernia's three. The Blue Jays nearly added an insurance goal in the 77th minute, but Waso's header hit the post and stayed out.

Haaf, Waso and Graydon Rogers shared the team lead with three shots in support of reigning Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week, goalkeeper Brian Gately. Gately stopped one shot in recording his fourth straight win.

Rider made four saves for Alvernia.

The Blue Jays will open Landmark Conference play Saturday afternoon at Drew. Game time is 4 p.m.
