McNamee wins Galen Piper XC Challenge for women's cross country

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- Only two runners ran better than 15:00 in Friday night's 4k at the Galen E. Piper Alumni Open/XC Challenge, and Elizabethtown College women's cross country senior Brenna McNamee was the faster of the two to win the race for the Blue Jays. As a team, E-town finished third with 58 points.

McNamee, who had never been the first to cross line in a cross country race, changed that Friday night. The senior beat out Dickinson's Tessa Cassidy by one second to take the individual title. McNamee's winning time was 14:58, a new 4,000-meter personal record. Cassidy ran 14:59.

The upperclassmen had a strong night for Elizabethtown, as fellow senior Kelsey Brady took sixth in 15:05, also a new 4k PR.

Senior Maria Anderson just missed out on a personal best 4k time of her own by less than a second. She ran 15:27 and placed 15th. Junior Colleen Kernan came in four seconds off her teammate's pace and finished in 15:31. Kernan's time also set a new PR. She was 16th.

Freshman Kaitlin Donahue made an impact in the season's first meet as she was the fifth and final scorer for the Blue Jays. Donahue posted a time of 15:43 and was 21st overall.

Friday night's meet featured 108 runners from nine different teams.

The women's cross country team will host their alums for the Blue Jay Alumni Challenge next Saturday, Sept. 9 at 11 a.m. and unveil the program's new course.
