Spartans clip Blue Jays in four

YORK, Pa. -- Elizabethtown won a spirited second set against homestanding York (Pa.) Monday evening, but the Blue Jays could not build on that momentum in a 3-1 loss to the Spartans at Charles Wolf Gymnasium.

Four of sophomore Elle Shatto's match-high 15 kills came in the second when the Blue Jays (3-3) opened a quick 10-point lead and never looked back.

Mackenzie Garner and Marisa Krinock added three kills apiece and Elizabethtown had three services aces in opening its lead to as many as nine points, 23-14. The guests emerged with a 25-18 win in the set to tie the match after dropping the first 25-19.

The Spartans (6-3) were particularly effective at the net on defense, putting up 15 blocks and limiting E-town to a .096 hitting percentage for the night. Cheyenne Altland accounted for eight block assists, while Madyson Whitcomb had seven and Hannah Siaurusaitis six. The Jays, meanwhile, failed to hit better than .100 in three of four sets on the evening.

Despite their attacking woes, the Blue Jays were in contention to win both the third and fourth sets and potentially write a different outcome.

Elizabethtown rallied from a 20-12 deficit in the third, getting within three, 23-20, on a York attacking error and again at 24-21 on a Garner kill set up by Gabby Anders. The Spartans held on, however, when Tyler Williams ended the set with a kill of her own.

In the fourth, E-town again fell into a sizable hole before clawing its way back to 20-16 on another of Garner's 12 kills, only to see the hosts score five of the final eight points in ending the match.

Shatto recorded her third consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. Anders led all players with 39 assists, Chelsea Gallagher had 15 digs and Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro compiled 12 digs and two aces.

Though the Spartans got out-killed 43-39, they were opportunistic with their chances hitting .164 overall (39 kills-19 errors-122 attempts) and a match best .309 (9-2-23) in the fourth set.

Outside hitter Eryn Brady was the lone York player to reach double digits in kills, finishing with 10. Whitcomb followed with eight and a trio of Spartans had six. Gabby Emeigh assisted on 21 of the team's 39 kills, while libero Alexis Harbold had a fantastic night with 25 digs, many challenging.

Head coach Alex Hinsey leads the Blue Jays down to Langhorne for a 7 p.m. start against Cairn on Thursday evening, before Elizabethtown opens its home schedule against Penn State Berks on Saturday at noon.
