Waso nets hat trick, Blue Jays blast Mustangs in opener

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- All-America forward Gilbert Waso collected his first career hat trick and set a new personal benchmark with seven points --all before halftime. Elizabethtown scored six first-half goals in a commanding, 7-1, season-opening victory over Morrisville State in the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic Friday night at Herr Field.

Waso needed just six minutes to put the Blue Jays (1-0) on the board. The junior worked a give-and-go with classmate Tyler Colasanto, before beating Mustangs' keeper Cody Welkley for a 1-0 lead. Waso victimized Welkley again in the 16th minute to double E-town's lead and put the finishing touches on his hat trick in the 29th.

Waso's hat trick goal was Elizabethtown's third in 1:52. Brendan Burke stole a pass and slipped one by Morrisville State's helpless keeper for his first career goal at the 26:55 mark and a mere 19 seconds later, sophomore JD Haaf punched home a pass from Waso to give the hosts a 4-0 lead.

A pair of career firsts were realized minute before halftime when Pedro Andrade blistered a shot off the right post and in for the Blue Jays' sixth goal of the evening. It was Andrade's first goal and freshman Zach Kratzer notched his first career point, earning an assist along with Cameron Sheva.

Another freshman, defender Graydon Rogers, set up Haaf's second goal in the 56th minute to conclude the scoring for Elizabethtown.

Morrisville State (0-1) spoiled the shutout with less than 10 minutes remaining when Julian Rodriguez converted an ill-timed pass by the Blue Jays into a breakaway goal.

E-town smothered the Mustangs in the first half, outshooting them 21-1 and 27-6 for the game. Waso attempted nine shots --six on goal. Burke, Haaf and Aaron Rathsam each took three. Blue Jays' starting goalkeeper Brian Gately did not even need to make a save in more than 60 minutes before departing. Freshman Josh Jarrett made a pair of stops in a hair under 28 minutes of work.

Welkley was credited with six saves in defeat while facing a deluge of shots from the home side.

Elizabethtown is back at home Saturday evening at 7 to face William Paterson.
