Men's soccer beaten by golden goal

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown could not capitalize on two different leads Saturday night, eventually falling to William Paterson, 3-2, on Keysean Brant-Sharp's golden goal with 37 seconds left in overtime in the Brothers Pizza Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic at Herr Field.

For the second straight evening, the Blue Jays went up a goal in the opening 10 minutes, this time when Aaron Rathsam put home the rebound of JD Haaf's initial shot in the ninth minute for his first goal of the season.

Elizabethtown's lead lasted all of 5:14 before JP Gonzales hit a ball into the upper right corner to pull the Pioneers (1-1) even in the 14th minute.

Though the Jays (1-1) had some early chances, William Paterson slowly shifted play to the opposite end of the field and put E-town on its heels.

In the 66th minute with off-and-on showers lingering, Mitchell Gochnauer headed in a corner by Haaf to put the Blue Jays back in front, only to have the Pioneers' Kyle Adams answer in the 78th minute with a goal that would eventually send the game to overtime.

William Paterson had all the momentum heading to the extra session after spending large chunks of the second half deep in E-town's zone. The Pioneers outshot the Blue Jays 11-3 in the second half and 24-11 for the game. The guests also controlled overtime, eventually drawing a foul just outside the 18-yard box that led to the game-winning goal.

Gonzales' free kick with little more than half a minute left in the first OT was stopped by Jays' keeper Brian Gately, but the rebound fell right in front of the goal and Brant-Sharp was there to poke it in at 99:23 to send WPU home with the victory.

Gately made nine saves, his most in an E-town uniform in 10 career appearances. Kyle Quigley had three for William Paterson, which defeated E-town for the second time in eight all-time meetings.

Elizabethtown will take part in the Jimmy Mills Tournament next weekend in a similar format to this past weekend's Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic. The Blue Jays face Haverford College on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Eastern University, before turning around to play Eastern on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Haverford.
