Juniata shuts out men's tennis

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Defending Landmark Conference runner-up Juniata powered its way to a 9-0 sweep of the Elizabethtown College men's tennis team Sunday afternoon.

While the Blue Jays (3-8, 1-3 Landmark) were unable to secure a point in the match, there were positives to take away the match. That was especially true in doubles, where two matches went to the wire.

At No. 1, E-town's Alex Machalick and Connor Martin fell by an 8-6 score to Dean Polisena and Roy Liberman. The Jays' third pair of Matthew Hornbaker and Nick Strobel also put up a valiant effort in an 8-5 defeat to Dan Ansel and Jason Gerber.

The Eagles (5-1, 3-0) moved into a share of first place in the Landmark with Scranton as they won all six singles matches in straight sets. Hornbaker claimed five games in a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Kohout at No. 3 and Nathan Dowling did the same in a 6-2, 6-3 defeat to Ansel at No. 5.

Elizabethtown has less than 48 hours to get ready for Tuesday's Landmark match against Moravian. The Blue Jays will be back on their home courts for the matchup, which is set to start at 4 p.m.
