Varrato homers, Blue Jays split with Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Emma Varrato homered for the third time this season as the Elizabethtown College softball team snapped its losing skid and split with Catholic Saturday afternoon in a Landmark Conference doubleheader.

Game 1: Elizabethtown 5, Catholic 3
Like Elizabethtown (4-18, 1-5 Landmark) has done for much of the season, the Blue Jays jumped ahead in the first inning on an RBI single up the middle from Christina Dark. Varrato scored after getting on and stealing second.

Catholic (14-10, 3-3 Landmark) scored twice in the bottom half of the first and added another run in the second to take a 3-1 lead into the third inning.

E-town tied game one up with one swing of the bat. As Jess Kutteroff stood on first, Varrato allowed the two of them to trot safely around the bases as the sophomore slugger hit her third home run of the season to left field.

Amber Sergas allowed only one hit after the second inning to the Cardinals and her offense provided her with two more runs. Varrato drove in her third RBI of the game with a single to right center. Brittany Ritter scored from third after stealing the base. She had singled to lead off the top of the fifth.

Mara Rhodes came around to score from second. Rhodes led off the seventh with a double. Kutteroff was able to reach on an error and advanced to second on the play as Rhodes scored to make it 5-3.

Alyssa Wilkinson relieved Sergas after 5.1 innings of work. Wilkinson did not allow a run in her 1.2 innings of relief and earned her first career save. Sergas got her second win of the season.

Game 2: Catholic 9, Elizabethtown 0 (F/5)
Catholic took charge in game two, holding the Blue Jays scoreless. The Cardinals grabbed an early lead with a sacrifice fly in the first inning to make it 1-0.

CUA tacked on three runs in the third and posted five more in the fourth. E-town was unable to plate any runs in the fifth, ending the game after the top half.

Kutteroff, Varrato, and Dark had a hit each for Elizabethtown in game two.

The softball team hosts York (Pa.) on Tuesday, April 11 for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
