Blue Jays battle Spartans, fall in two

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team battled York (Pa.) in both games of a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at The Nest, but the Spartans got the better of the Blue Jays in both games, winning 6-0 in game one and outlasting E-town 2-0 in eight innings to get the sweep.

Game 1: York (Pa.) 6, Elizabethtown 0
Ginger Lewis pitched effectively for York (Pa.) (23-11), going all seven innings in game one for the Spartans. The righty had a no-hitter going, but Christina Dark was able to break the bid up in the bottom of the seventh with a double that reached the center field fence.

Carleigh Ruleman and Haley Hirn hit back-to-back homers for the Spartans in the third inning to break a scoreless tie. Then, up 4-0 in the fifth, YCP scored two more to increase the lead to 6-0.

Lewis got the final three outs in the seventh to record the complete game shutout.

Game 2: York (Pa.) 2, Elizabethtown 0 (F/8)
York had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but starter Amber Sergas was able to work out of those situations and keep the Spartans off the scoreboard.

The only issue was, Melissa Jurkiewicz was doing the same thing to the Blue Jays.

Hitless through four, Kelsey Brown singled to left field in the fifth for E-town, but she would end up being stranded.

The Spartans threatened to score in the top of the seventh with runners at second and third and two outs. Sergas got the batter to fan on her two-strike delivery and got herself out of a jam and give Elizabethtown a chance to win it in walk-off fashion.

Varrato led off the seventh with a single, but Jurkiewicz retired the side and sent the game to extra innings.

YCP wasted no time as Ruleman doubled to center to score the runner from second. Mia Ruffalo was placed after pinch running for Joanne Marmo.

The Spartans tacked on an insurance run to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom half of the eighth.

Jurkiewicz got three straight ground outs to end the ball game and give the sweep to York.

Varrato and Brown recorded hits for EC in game two.

The Blue Jays will host Franklin & Marshall on Thursday, April 13 for another non-conference doubleheader set to begin at 3 p.m.
