Diplomats deny E-town a split with late game two surge

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- After taking game one from the Elizabethtown College softball team, Franklin & Marshall scored all six of its runs in game two over the final two innings to deny the Blue Jays a split of Thursday's non-conference doubleheader at The Nest. E-town had a lead on F&M until the Diplomats came through in the sixth and seventh innings.

Game 1: Franklin & Marshall 7, Elizabethtown 1
Nicole Heckert singled to start off the bottom half of the first for Elizabethtown (4-22) after Alyssa Wilkinson yielded only a two-out single before getting a ground out to end Franklin & Marshall's (9-15) top half.

It would be Jess Kutteroff at third after she drew a walk and two fielder's choices later. The freshman would score as Kelsey Brown was safe on a fielding error to put E-town ahead 1-0.

Katie Wenger held the Jays in check from there on out. She retired EC in order in the second and third innings and saw her offense give her some run support in the fourth with five runs on five hits.

Brown drove a one-out double to the center field fence, but Elizabethtown couldn't produce anything off it.

Franklin & Marshall added two more runs in the seventh and Wenger finished off her complete game win.

Brown and Nicole Heckert each had two hits for Elizabethtown.

Game 2: Franklin & Marshall 6, Elizabethtown 2
The Heckerts got things going for E-town in the third inning of game two. Heather Heckert led off with a base knock up the middle. Nicole Heckert followed up with a single to center. Kutteroff laid down a bunt to advance the runners to second and third.

Emma Varrato's base hit to short allowed Heather Heckert to score from third with one out in the inning. Brown knocked in Nicole Heckert with two outs in the inning as E-town's lead doubled to 2-0. Kelsey Farrington singled to load the bases, but Izzy Schaefer stopped the Jays from scoring any more runs with a strike out to end the third.

Elizabethtown held the 2-0 lead through the fifth inning, but ran into some trouble in the sixth. With two runners on, Lexi Piccinich sent a ball over the left field fence for a three-run home run to give F&M the lead with one swing of the bat.

Two batters later, Megan Ryan doubled home Katie Wenger, who had singled previously. The Diplomats led 5-2 after the sixth.

Crystal Good's RBI single in the seventh made it 6-2.

Varrato got on in the seventh with a one-out base hit to start the rally, but it would be the only hit of the inning off Schaefer as Franklin & Marshall held on 6-2 to complete the sweep.

Varrato went 3-for-4 in game two with an RBI. Heather Heckert also had a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3.

Elizabethtown will make up its Landmark Conference doubleheader at Drew tomorrow beginning at 3 p.m.
