Wilkinson, Brown's bats get softball a split at Drew

MADISON, N.J. -- There were identical 5-4 scores in Friday's Landmark Conference doubleheader between the Elizabethtown College softball team and Drew. Each team came out on the winning end of one, as the Rangers won game one and the Blue Jays took game two. Kelsey Brown delivered the go-ahead run for E-town in game two as the Jays held on to get the split.

Game 1: Drew 5, Elizabethtown 4
It was all Elizabethtown (5-23, 2-6 Landmark) in the first three innings as the Blue Jays built up a 3-0 lead. Emma Varrato singled in Mara Rhodes in the top of the first. Rhodes doubled to lead off the game and advanced to third on a ground out before Varrato drove in her 21st RBI of the season.

A Rangers' throwing error allowed Christina Dark to score in the third to make it 2-0. The two-out error proved costly for Drew (5-16, 2-4 Landmark). Brittany Ritter had the bases loaded and emptied two of them with a two-run single to left field. Alyssa Wilkinson and Brown scored on the play. Wilkinson got on two batters earlier with a base hit. Ritter's first multi-RBI hit gave E-town a 4-0 lead after the top half of the third.

Drew pulled a run back in the fourth (4-1), and by the end of the sixth, it was tied up at 4-4. Elizabethtown couldn't grab the lead in its own half of the seventh, but the Rangers cashed in in theirs. Phylicia Pellot was on second with one out when Heather Ronchi hit a double to score the run in walk-off fashion.

Varrato, Brown, Wilkinson, and Ritter each had two hits in game one for E-town. Wilkinson and Rhodes both had doubles in the game.

Game 2: Elizabethtown 5, Drew 4
There were a total of four lead changes in game two as every time Elizabethtown went ahead, Drew battled back.

Megan Elmer's RBI ground out started the scoring for the Jays in the top of the second. An inning later, the Rangers were even at 1-1 on a Ronchi RBI single.

After a second-inning double, Brown drove in her first run of the game in the fourth on an RBI base hit up the middle. Varrato scored from third after leading off the inning with a single through the right side. Brown's RBI made it 2-1 and was her 18th of the season.

The Rangers tied game two for the second time in the fifth inning.

It was Elizabethtown's turn to respond in the next half inning, top six. A defensive error on Drew led to Morgan Herr crossing the plate to return the lead to the Jays. Two batters later, Nicole Heckert's ground out RBI pushed the advantage up to two, 4-2.

Drew wasn't done just yet, coming back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it a third time. Pellot singled down the left line to score two.

Jess Kutteroff led off the seventh with a single to right field. She moved up on a grounder to get into scoring position for Brown. The senior's fourth hit of the game was her most important of the day as it scored Kutteroff from second and gave the Blue Jays a 5-4 lead.

Sara McKee, who pitched her third complete game of the season, retired the side in order in the seventh and got her second win of the season as E-town held on 5-4.

Brown was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate while Wilkinson went 2-for-4.

Elizabethtown will host Muhlenberg on Wednesday, April 19 for a non-conference doubleheader at The Nest beginning at 3 p.m.
