Brown gets hit No. 100, softball swept by Muhlenberg

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Kelsey Brown needed just three hits Wednesday to become the 14th player in Elizabethtown College softball program history to reach 100 for career. After two hits in game one, Brown recorded No. 100 in game two. E-town fell to Muhlenberg at The Nest, however, in both games. The Mules took game one, 4-1, and completed the sweep with a 7-4 game two victory.

Game 1: Muhlenberg 4, Elizabethtown 1
Game one of Wednesday's non-conference matchup went scoreless through the first three innings. Muhlenberg (12-18) started the scoring in the top of the fourth.

Amelia Shelley drove in Karissa Astrella with an RBI single up the middle to make it 1-0 Mules. Kristy Selby made it back-to-back RBI singles to double the lead to 2-0. Selby knocked in her second run of the game in the sixth that made it 3-0 at that point.

Emma Varrato led off the sixth for Elizabethtown (5-25) with a double that reached the fence in left center. Brown singled to center to score Varrato and get the Blue Jays on the board at 3-1.

Brittany Ritter singled through the left side in the seventh to start a two-out rally. Hayley Peterson, who came on in the fourth to pitch for Muhlenberg, recorded the final out to get the Mules the win.

Game 2: Muhlenberg 7, Elizabethtown 4
Sarah Schubert stepped up to the plate in the second inning of game two with the bases loaded. She quickly unloaded them all as the ball she hit sailed high into the overcast skies at The Nest and landed on the other side of the fence for a grand slam to get Muhlenberg ahead 4-0.

E-town came back in the third with a three-run inning. Jess Kutteroff stole second and the catcher's attempt to throw out the freshman base stealer rolled into center field, which allowed Mara Rhodes to score from third.

Kutteroff made it to third and would score on a Varrato RBI sacrifice fly to right. Sara McKee singled home Christina Dark later in the inning to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.

Muhlenberg responded with two runs in the fifth on an RBI single and double.

Brown plated her first run of the game in the sixth for the Blue Jays after getting her 100th hit an inning earlier on a single. She dropped a blooper into left field to score Rhodes from third. That run made it 7-4 going into the seventh.

The Mules tacked on an insurance run in the seventh and Peterson closed out the game to get her first save of the season.

Brown extended her hit streak to seven games. Rhodes, Kutteroff, and Kelsey Farrington each had three hits for the Jays in game two. Dark added a pair of hits and also pitched 0.2 innings.

Elizabethtown will host Susquehanna for a Landmark Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 22, at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday will also be Senior Day for the Blue Jays.
