Softball suffers pair of close defeats to Susquehanna

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The rainy weather Saturday afternoon at The Nest added a damper to the senior day festivities for the Elizabethtown College softball team. After a brief rain delay, E-town and visiting Susquehanna were able to play out their Landmark Conference doubleheader despite the wet conditions. The River Hawks won both games close by finals of 5-2 and 2-0.

Game 1: Susquehanna 5, Elizabethtown 2
Amber Sergas got a swinging strikeout to end the top of the first and in the next half inning, Elizabethtown (5-27, 2-8 Landmark) took the lead with a run in its half of the first.

Mara Rhodes led off with double to left field. Jess Kutteroff advanced the leadoff batter to third with a sacrifice bunt. Rhodes could have scored from first as Varrato drilled a double to left center. Instead, Rhodes plated easily from third and E-town had a 1-0 lead after the first inning.

Susquehanna (21-11, 8-2 Landmark) started the second the way the Jays did the first, with a double. Heather Pearson singled in a run, then with two outs, Leigh Ann Greenwald added RBI single before a line out to Brittany Ritter ended the second with the River Hawks up 2-1.

The Hawks tacked on another run in the third and two more in the fourth to increase the lead to 5-1.

Varrato led off the sixth with her second hit of the game and 95th of her career through the right side. A wild pitch allowed the sophomore the move up to second. A two-out single by Alyssa Wilkinson scored Varrato and cut the deficit to 5-2.

Nicole Heckert doubled to left center after Wilkinson's single and put runners at second and third. Susquehanna pitcher Jamie Fesinstine got a strike out to end the threat.

Rhodes reached on a throwing error by the River Hawks in the seventh, but Fesinstine recorded the final two outs and SU held on 5-2.

Game 2: Susquehanna 2, Elizabethtown 0
Emilie Boman got the River Hawks going in game two with an RBI single up the middle in the first inning as the visitors took the lead 1-0.

Nicole Heckert and Heather Heckert hit back-to-back singles in the second inning to put two on for the Blue Jays, but Alexa Gonzalez got an infield fly pop out and a fly ball to left to get out of the inning unscathed.

E-town also had runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings, but could not produce a run off Gonzalez.

In Susquehanna's half of the fifth, Lauren Creamer drew a bases loaded walk for the RBI and an insurance run for the River Hawks.

The Blue Jays threatened in the sixth. Kelsey Farrington singled to right center to load the bases with two outs in the inning and the game-tying run at second and go-ahead at first.

Fesinstine came in after Farrington's single to relieve Gonzalez and got a double play line out to end the inning. She returned for the seventh and retired the Jays in order to record her third save of the season.

Heather Heckert and Farrington both had two hits each in game two to lead E-town.

Elizabethtown will make up its non-conference at Dickinson on Monday, April 24 at 5 and 7 p.m.
