Bein's bat helps Blue Jays best Lebanon Valley

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Nick Bein extended his hit streak to five games with a pair of hits for the Elizabethtown College baseball team Wednesday afternoon against Lebanon Valley at Kevin Scott Boyd Stadium. It was Bein's second hit that mattered most as he singled home Mike Christy in the bottom of the tenth inning to lift the Blue Jays over the Dutchmen, 1-0.

The top of Elizabethtown's (12-8) order did the damage in terms of hit. Kyle Fackler, Colby Smith, Christy, Nick Lorenz, and Bein combined for ten of E-town's 11 hits in the game.

Anthony Lippy was on the bump for the Blue Jays and pitched effectively for 6.2 innings. He struck out five batters, including two in the first inning.

A two-out single to right by Chase Weik in the second put Mike Puglisi at third for Lebanon Valley (10-10). Weik attempted to steal second with the next batter up, but Anthony Knight gunned down the would-be base stealer as Fackler applied the tag to get the third out of the inning. Knight also threw out an LVC base runner in the fifth at third base.

Doug Hook and Fackler hit back-to-back two-out singles in the third, but were left stranded. The Jays finished with nine runners left on based. Lebanon Valley had ten.

Fackler and Smith each singled through the left side to start the sixth. Christy moved them up with a sacrifice bunt, but E-town was unable to get either runner home.

Richy Masciarelli was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the ninth that loaded the bases with two outs, but Dutchmen pitcher Zach Yingst was able to induce a ground out to end the inning and send the game to extras.

Josh Kwak came on to relieve Nate Baxter in the eighth after the southpaw was brought in for Lippy. Kwak pitched three innings of relief work and surrendered just one hit and struck out one to keep the game scoreless.

Elizabethtown was down to its final out in the tenth inning when Christy singled the right center. Lorenz followed suit with a base knock to left. Bein stepped in and smacked a ball to left field, deep enough to allow Christy to score from second to end the game.

Kwak got the win and improved to 2-0. Fackler led the Jays with a 4-for-5 effort. Smith and Bein each had two hits for E-town.

The baseball team will enjoy its bye weekend and return to action on Monday, April 10, at 4 p.m. against Albright.
