King's sends men's tennis to sixth straight defeat

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Elizabethtown was unable to break out of its recent funk, Monday, dropping its sixth consecutive match, 6-3, at King's (Pa.).

The Blue Jays were oh-so-close to grabbing their first win since a 7-2 victory over Defiance during their Spring Break trip to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, March 6, but a pair of three-set matches in singles both swung the Monarchs' way.

Coach Eric Fritzges shuffled his doubles lineup, breaking up his No. 2 team of Matthew Hornbaker and Nathan Dowling in favor of Tyler Spinello and Dowling at No. 2 and a Hornbaker-Tristan Boheim combo at No. 3. The move nearly paid off at both flights, as Hornbaker and Dowling won 8-6 over Terry Briggs and Ryan Kopishke, while Spinello and Dowling fell in a tightly-contested match, 9-7, to Tyler Millan and Josh Mesaris.

King's (4-5) stole the other doubles point up for grabs, as its No. 1 team of Nathan Carl and Luke Whitenight held on for an 8-6 victory over E-town's Alex Machalick and Connor Martin.

Dowling and Machalick rebounded with wins in their singles matches to help the Blue Jays (2-7) even the score at three.

Dowling swiftly defeated Tyler Tuck 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and Machalick won for the second time in his last three matches 7-6 (4), 6-3 against Carl at No. 1.

Hornbaker won the first set off Whitenight in their third singles match, but Whitenight came back forcefully in the second and third to win it 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. Spinello also went three sets at fourth singles, but couldn't carry the momentum of a second-set win to the third against Mesaris, who prevailed 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Elizabethtown's next chance to get back in the win column comes Thursday when it travels to Stevenson for a 4 p.m. first serve.
