Men's tennis continues resurgence with 8-1 victory over Catholic

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown men's tennis gave its seniors a send-off to remember with an 8-1 defeat of Catholic on Senior Day at the Alumni Courts Sunday afternoon.

While the Blue Jays will come up just shy of the final Landmark Championship tournament spot, they've gotten progressively better throughout the season. The results have shown it, too, with four dominant victories in their last five matches.

For the first time all season, E-town (7-9, 3-4 Landmark) pulled off a doubles sweep.

Freshmen Connor Martin and Tyler Spinello, paired together for the first time at Stevenson last Thursday, broke through with their first win, 8-4, over the Cardinals' Jan Lasota and Rob Alexander.

At No. 3, Matthew Hornbaker and Nick Strobel won by a matching 8-4 score against Kyle Weber and Matt Pham.

Seniors Alex Machalick and Nathan Dowling closed out a strong showing for the Jays in doubles with an 8-5 triumph over Ted Tiu and Jack Emerick.

Elizabethtown went on to roll through singles, taking five of six points.

Martin was beaten just once in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alexander at No. 2, while Machalick claimed a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 victory against Lasota.

Spinello needed three sets and a tiebreaker to put away Tiu at third singles 3-6, 6-4 7-6 (5). The Blue Jays built a 7-0 lead when No. 4 Hornbaker turned aside Weber 6-2, 6-3.

Emerick broke the goose egg for Catholic (3-10, 1-5) with a win at fifth singles, but Strobel secured the last point for E-town, defeating Pham 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6.

Prior to Sunday's match, seniors Dowling, Hornbaker and Machalick were honored during a small ceremony.

Elizabethtown will close out its season by concluding its suspended match (rain) with Messiah from March 30 on Tuesday at 4 p.m. on the Alumni Courts. The Blue Jays trailed 3-0 after doubles before play was halted. Tuesday's match will only feature the six singles matches in their entirety.
