Goucher shuts out Blue Jays

Results

HERSHEY, Pa. -- Elizabethtown saw its three-match winning streak and postseason prospects come to an end with a 9-0 loss to Goucher Saturday afternoon at the Hershey Racquet Club.

The defending Landmark Conference champion Gophers were in control of the match, moved indoors due to morning rains on the Elizabethtown campus, from start to finish.

E-town (6-9, 2-4 Landmark) put up a pair of fights in doubles, with freshmen Connor Martin and Tyler Spinello coming up a hair short against Michael Herman and Elliot Diehl at No. 1, 8-6.

Seniors Alex Machalick and Nathan Dowling captured four games in an 8-4 loss to Jack Hodges and Midori Fujitani at No. 2.

Machalick pushed his first singles match against Herman to a third set, bouncing back from a 6-0 loss in the first to win the second, 6-3. Herman closed the Blue Jays' top player out in the third, however, 6-1.

Matthew Hornbaker played Goucher's (12-8, 4-1) Frankie Mullinix close at No. 3 throughout the duration of their match, falling 6-4, 6-4.

Elizabethtown will honor its 2017 senior class of Dowling, Hornbaker and Dowling prior to Sunday's 1 p.m. match against Catholic.

Coach Eric Fritzges also announced Saturday that the Blue Jays will complete their suspended home match against Messiah on Tuesday, April 25, at 4 p.m. The Falcons led the match 3-0 after doubles on March 30, and the two teams will only play singles matches on Tuesday.
