Game Recap: Softball |

Scranton comes back twice to sweep Elizabethtown

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team had leads in each of the two games Sunday afternoon at The Nest against visiting Scranton. The Royals managed comebacks in both games to take two from E-town.

Game 1: Scranton 6, Elizabethtown 2
Jess Kutteroff doubled to left center in her first at-bat of the game in the bottom of the first inning to give Elizabethtown (3-17, 0-4 Landmark) a chance to score right away.

Emma Varrato reached on a fielding error, and on the play, Kutteroff had enough time to make it to third and turn home to give the Jays a 1-0 lead.

Amber Sergas spread out five hits over her six-and-one-third innings and took that same 1-0 lead into the seventh.

As quiet at Scranton's (7-6, 2-2 Landmark) bats had been through six innings, the Royals got hot quick. Scranton plated six runs in the seventh to take a 6-1 lead into the bottom half of the inning.

E-town had runners on second and third for Ashley Hullihan, who knocked a base hit up the middle to score Morgan Herr with two outs. It would be the last run the Blue Jays would get as Morgan Rentzheimer got the final out to secure Scranton's 6-2 win.

Game 2: Scranton 5, Elizabethtown 4
Christina Dark got E-town off to another fast start in the first inning. Her single to short was deep enough to allow Mara Rhodes to score. Rhodes led off the inning with a single through the right side.

Elizabethtown led 1-0 after the first.

The Jays weren't done early on, either. Alyssa Wilkinson and Megan Elmer drew walks to put two on with one out. Three batters later, Kutteroff drove a ball to right center with the bases full. All three runners scored safely and E-town's lead grew to 4-0.

Caitlin Long settled in for Scranton and would hold the Blue Jays scoreless over the final four innings. Her offense picked her up, beginning in the third when Jacqueline DeSarro doubled home Molly Hampsey to get the Royals on the board at 4-1.

After two more runs in the fourth made it 4-3, the Royals got level in the sixth on Hampsey's sac fly.

Christine Kiefer then gave Scranton the lead in the seventh with a pinch-hit RBI single to left.

Rentzheimer came on in relief of Long in the seventh after Elmer led off with a walk. E-town wasn't able to produce with the game-tying run on first and Scranton left with the sweep.

Rhodes led the Jays with a pair of hits and two runs scored in game two. Kutteroff and Dark had the other two hits for EC. Rhodes and Kutteroff each had a hit in game one as well.

The softball team will host Ursinus on Thursday, April 6, at The Nest for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
