Lorenz lifts Blue Jays over Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Nick Lorenz finished with a season-high in RBIs Wednesday for the Elizabethtown College baseball team as the Blue Jays downed Messiah 11-3 in a nine-inning non-conference matchup with the Falcons. Lorenz went 2-for-5 at the plate, including a home run, and was one of ten players to record at least a hit for E-town.

Colby Smith put Elizabethtown (17-10) up right away in the first on an RBI ground out that scored Kyle Fackler. Fackler had led off the game with a double to left center.

Alec Miller, who went six innings and scattered five hits and allowed just one run, held Messiah (10-19) in check. Miller made that first-inning run stand up through the first three innings until E-town added on another in the fourth, three in the fifth, and six in the sixth. He left the game with an 11-1 lead with that run being unearned. Miller struck out two.

James Kantner scored on an error in the fourth that made it 2-0. Lorenz accounted for all three runs in the fifth with a three-run homer, his third of the season. Mike Christy and Smith scored on the home run.

Richy Masciarelli stole second in the sixth inning, and with an error on the play, advanced to third while Fackler scored safely. Later, Lorenz doubled for his second hit of the game and second in as many innings.

Nick Bein and Tom Armstrong each had RBIs to add on to the growing score for Elizabethtown. Doug Hook capped it off with a two-run single to give the Jays an 11-0 lead after the top half of the sixth.

The Falcons scored once in the sixth and twice in the eighth, but by then, the damage the Blue Jays had dealt was too great to overcome.

Braden Stinar, Andrew Brndjar, and Josh Kwak combined for three innings of relief to finish off Messiah.

Riley McGinley and Andrew Coleman each had a hit as pinch-hitters. Fackler, Christy, Kantner, and Lorenz all had multi-hit efforts for E-town.

The Blue Jays are at Susquehanna this weekend for their Landmark Conference series with the River Hawks. Up first is the doubleheader, which begins Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m.
